Is someone you love slowly withdrawing from conversations?

Maybe they’re turning up the TV, missing more words, or avoiding family gatherings. When listening becomes exhausting, people with hearing loss may begin participating less and less.

That doesn’t have to become their new normal.

Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus is opening our South Jordan office this September. We help individuals and their families understand what may be happening and explore the options available.

A normal hearing test doesn't always mean your hearing is fine.

Research from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging found that people with poor speech-in-noise scores showed faster cognitive decline — even when their standard audiograms looked completely normal. A 2025 follow-up found those same scores predicted future hearing threshold deterioration.

The standard audiogram measures whether you can detect soft sounds in a quiet room. It was never designed to measure how your auditory system handles speech when there's competing noise — which is where most people actually struggle.

At Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus, we run speech-in-noise testing as a routine part of every comprehensive evaluation. Not as an add-on. Not by request. As a baseline.

Because if we're only measuring what you can hear in silence, we're missing the picture that actually matters.

If you've been told your hearing is normal but you're still struggling in noise — or if you're managing tinnitus and want to understand the full picture of your auditory health — a comprehensive evaluation is the right place to start.

Does tinnitus really come from your ears?

Tinnitus may begin with a change in the auditory system, but the brain can become increasingly sensitive to the signal. Over time, that response may develop into a reinforced pattern, which helps explain why chronic tinnitus can feel so persistent.

The good news is that persistent tinnitus does not mean meaningful improvement is out of reach. Understanding what you’re hearing—and getting guidance earlier—can help identify the right next step.

If you’re unsure whether your sound is tinnitus, hearing-related, or something else, schedule a free 15-minute tinnitus strategy call with Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus: https://myhearingportal.com/?clinic=P2FwaUtleT02czhhdDdYT21sZjMmY2xpbmljTmFtZT1VVF90aW1w

Why do hearing aids sometimes whistle?

That high-pitched squeal is called feedback. It happens when sound from the hearing aid escapes the ear, gets picked up by the microphone, and is amplified again.

One common cause is earwax. When wax blocks the ear canal, sound can bounce back toward the hearing aid instead of traveling normally into the ear.

Don’t try to dig the wax out yourself. Cotton swabs and other objects can push it deeper, injure the ear canal, or damage the eardrum.
Have your ears and hearing aids checked by a hearing professional instead.

Are your new hearing aids not working as well as you expected?
Once you’re past the initial adjustment period, two common problems may be holding them back:

The technology may not be advanced enough to manage background noise effectively, or the hearing aids may not have been programmed correctly for your individual hearing loss.

Even excellent hearing aids can sound poor when certain pitches are over-amplified, under-amplified, or never properly verified in your ears.

If you’re still constantly asking people to repeat themselves, don’t assume hearing aids simply “don’t work” for you. The real problem may be the technology or the fitting.
