If you experience symptoms such as weakness, tingling, sharp pain, numbness, or a burning sensation in your lower leg, ankle, or foot, it may be from neuropathy or nerve entrapment.

Neuropathy is a generalized term that indicates your symptoms are caused by nerves. It is important to try to find the cause of your nerve symptoms to see what treatment is most appropriate.

Nerve entrapment occurs when your nerves become pinched or compressed. The most recognized nerve entrapment is carpal tunnel but there are multiple areas on your lower legs that can also get pinched. This means your nerves have pressure on them, causing them to become swollen and inflamed. Without treatment, nerve entrapment can become permanent.

When you have a condition that causes neuropathy or nerve entrapment, prompt treatment helps decrease your pain and reduce the chances the condition becomes permanent. Before heading to the store to buy your children new shoes, follow some of these tips to help prevent foot problems from shoes that fit poorly or are worn-out.

The best shoe fit is about a finger’s width from the end of the shoe to the tip of the big toe. If you buy shoes that are too big, they can cause the foot to slide forward and put extra pressure on the toes. If shoes are too tight they can cause blisters, corns, calluses, and ingrown toenails.

Children with flat feet need shoes that have a wide toe box, shock absorption, and great support. If necessary, buy shoes that have enough depth to use an orthotic , if needed. We have good orthotic options for kids (and adults)!

Over time, shoes wear out and lose their shock absorption. Make sure to inspect shoes for the correct cushioning and arch support. Worn-out shoes increase the risk of heel pain, ankle sprains, achilles tendonitis, and stress fractures.
