We're at the tail end of summer and the beginning of fall...finally!

We found an interesting article about how changing weather can affect snake activity. As temperatures change, snakes may be active at different times of the day — including midmorning and late afternoon.

Temperature isn't the only thing that can affect snake activity. Factors like harvest and heavy rains can push snakes out of their usual habitats and closer to areas where people may be.

Did you know copperheads LOVE cicadas? We sure didn't until this year!

According to the University of Georgia, cicadas can provide an abundant food source for copperheads. The snakes have been observed actively hunting cicadas around trees and other areas where the insects gather. So, all that buzzing you're hearing this time of year may be getting the attention of more than just us!

This is a good reminder for pet owners: where there are cicadas, there may also be copperheads looking for their next meal.

PSA: Do not put your IV sets in the freezer!

Our tech support has received several inquiries of IV sets breaking before administration after being stored in the freezer. After using our detective skills, we found its quite common, and sometimes problematic. If this is you, we kindly as you store them a room temperature!

🚫DO NOT freeze filtered IV set
✅DO freeze Rattler Antivenom
✅Do warm antivenom to body temperature by using a warm water bath before administering

Myth of the Month: "It's Been 24 Hours. It's Too Late for Antivenom."

I don't know how or why the "24-hour rule" is a thing, but it comes up (too) often. If you take one thing away from this email, let it be this: If you see signs of envenomation, treat with antivenom!

It's a common misconception that antivenom is no longer effective after 24 hours. We've seen firsthand Rattler Antivenom benefit a patient six days after envenomation.
