Attention Veterans and Veterans' families:
We want to make you aware of a new scam targeting veterans and their families that was reported today by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Veterans across the country are receiving postcards claiming that they or their spouse may qualify for additional monthly benefits through something called the “Veterans Savings Program.”
This program does not exist.
The postcards are designed to look legitimate and may include the recipient’s state and reference real veteran programs, such as CHAMPVA or TRICARE For Life. They then encourage the recipient to call quickly so they don't miss out on benefits.
The FTC warns that the purpose of these postcards is to get veterans or their family members on the phone and obtain sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and banking information.
What families should know
If a veteran or surviving spouse receives one of these postcards:
Do not call the number on the postcard.
Do not provide a Social Security number, banking information, or other personal information.
Be cautious of any communication creating urgency or suggesting benefits will be lost if you don't act immediately.
If there are questions about legitimate VA benefits, contact the VA directly using verified contact information rather than information provided in an unsolicited mailing.
