William H. “Vandy” VanDeWeerd Sr., age 87, of Amherst, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home.
He was born on June 20, 1939, in Amherst, Ohio, to Bert and Gretchen (nee Gerbrand) VanDeWeerd. Vandy proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged at the rank of Private E-4.
Throughout his life, Vandy was hardworking, resourceful, and a man of many talents. His career took him in several directions over the years. A skilled auto mechanic, he owned and operated his own automotive repair shop in Strongsville. He also worked in automobile sales and later in construction for H. Fior Construction.
Vandy believed in being involved in his community and giving of his time. He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Strongsville and was also a member of the American Kennel Club (AKC).
An outdoorsman at heart, Vandy enjoyed hunting and had a lifelong love for animals, especially dogs and horses. German Shorthaired Pointers held a particularly special place in his heart. He devoted countless hours to working with and training his dogs and enjoyed participating with them in field trials. His dedication and skill brought him great pride when, on May 12, 2012, he earned an Amateur Field Championship, an accomplishment that reflected both his competitive spirit and the special bond he shared with his dogs.

Nancy Ann Rufo Miraldi, age 94, of Cleveland Heights and Sheffield Lake, Ohio, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Reserve Care in Euclid, Ohio.
Nancy was born on March 18, 1932, in Lorain, Ohio, to Arthur J. and Elvira (nee Thomas) Rufo. A gifted and dedicated student, she attended Notre Dame College on a full scholarship, graduating in 1954 with a degree in Biology. Following graduation, Nancy began her professional career with B.F. Goodrich and then later at Harshaw Chemical Company.
In 1957, Nancy married the love of her life, Floro D. Miraldi, beginning a devoted marriage that would span 69 years. Following their wedding, the couple made their home in Boston, Massachusetts, where Nancy continued her career working in the animal laboratories at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After a brief time in Indiana, Nancy and Floro returned to the Cleveland area, where she taught at Mt. Carmel Elementary School until the birth of their only child, Carla.
Nancy embraced her role as a wife, mother and homemaker, finding her greatest joy in her family and creating a warm and loving home. Intelligent, creative and endlessly curious, she had a lifelong appreciation for art and continued to nurture her artistic talents through painting classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Amelia Ann Simpson “Amy” 77, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Ames Family Hospice, surrounded by the love of her family.
Amy was born on June 25, 1949, to the late Frank and Edith (nee Tesarek) Krakowski. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a 1967 graduate of Lorain High School. Throughout her life, Amelia brought dedication and care to everything she did. She worked for Ohio Edison as an office manager in Vermilion, but one of the roles she treasured most was that of homemaker, creating a loving and welcoming home for her family.
Amy had a special love for horses that remained an important part of her life. She found great joy in riding, training and showing horses and enjoyed sharing that passion with others as a 4-H advisor. Country music and rodeos were also among her favorite pastimes and reflected the spirited, down-to-earth way she embraced life.
Above all else, Amy’s greatest joy was her family. She loved them immensely and treasured every opportunity to be together. Her grandchildren held an especially precious place in her heart. She was their devoted grandmother and one of their biggest supporters, happily attending their sporting events, school activities and special occasions. Whether cheering from the sidelines or simply spending time together, Amy delighted in watching her grandchildren grow and was immensely proud of each of them.

Mike “Mikey” Gwinn, age 6, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026 at his home, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Born on August 22, 2019, in Cleveland, Ohio, Mikey entered this world with a rare disease that would bring challenges throughout his young life, but those challenges never defined the beautiful little boy he was.

Mikey had a spirit far bigger than the obstacles he faced. Though he was non-verbal, he had his own wonderful way of communicating with his bright eyes, an unforgettable smile framed by the sweetest dimples, and a contagious laugh that could fill a room. He especially lit up when his family entertained him, finding pure joy in the people he loved most.

Through every difficult day, Mikey showed remarkable strength. He was a courageous fighter with a gentle spirit. Perhaps his greatest gift was the way he reminded those around him that a meaningful life is not measured in words spoken, years lived, or milestones reached, but in love given and received.

He will be missed by his mother Carmen Irizarry (Alonzo Harrison); siblings Deliana, Adriana, Bronx, Brandon, and Alexis; grandmother Ida Vargas; birth mother Mercedes Gwinn; and many other loving family members. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Ever-James. All who knew Mikey are better people because he was here, and his beautiful spirit will forever remain a part of the family who loved him so deeply.

Mary Antoinette Wilson ( Starr), born March 17, 1939, in Beckley, West Virginia, passed away on Saturday, August 8, surrounded by the love of her family. Mary affectionally also known as Pat or Patty because she was born on St. Patricks day. Which caused us confusion when we were young because when the mail came, we wondered who "Mary "was. That is still funny to me because I think I was 11 before I knew her real name.

She is survived by her beloved daughters, Marlene and Darlene; her sister, Daphne Jessup; her brother, Buster Hawley; many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a large circle of family and friends who were blessed to know her love, kindness, and generosity.

She was preceded in death by many loved ones who welcomed her home.
Mom was married to Quay Owen Wilson, and together they adopted me and my twin sister. She loved us fiercely and made sure we always had what we needed, even if it meant working harder herself.

She was an amazing cook, a talented seamstress, and loved making candy and decorating cakes. Growing up, she made many of our clothes, and she made sure everything matched perfectly. At the time, we probably thought it was a little cheesy, but she was so proud and it made her happy.

Mom paid attention to every detail. She balanced her checkbook to the penny, and if it was a penny over or a penny under, she would find it. Giving up was never an option for her.
