Project Remote Project REMOTE is a training grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to train future Speech Language Pathologists at the University of Mass. Drs.

Mary Adrianopoulos (Project Director) and Mary Lynn Boscardin (Project Co-Director) have been awarded a five year $1.25 million grant through the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, to train SLP masters students to work in public school classrooms as SLP specialists in the assessment and intervention of children with Autism. The focus of this training project will b

e to expand the personnel preparation training masters program in SLP at UMass-Amherst to include the use of technologies, specifically a Telehealth / Telepractice platform, to deliver SLP services to students with a wide array of communication disorders from diverse backgrounds, including e-Supervision, e-Consultation in real-time, and professional development of practitioners and educators in the field. The objectives of this project are to: prepare SLP graduates over five years with the specialized knowledge, skills, and experience to assess and manage children with speech and language disabilities in the schools with a focus Autism; expand our masters SLP specialty training program in the use of Telepractice as a reliable and valid service delivery model in collaboration our well-established school partners; demonstrate and provide evidence-based practices, student progress monitoring, inclusive and collaborative teaching environments, and response to intervention models appropriate to improve and maintain outcomes and achievement among students with ASD; and
disseminate our state-of-art knowledge and empirical data regarding training of SLP specialists and in the use of Telepractice technologies.

Researchers in the department of communication disorders are seeking 30 volunteers age 8-14 to study the language, speech, voice, and auditory processing abilities of children with Autism and children who do not have Autism.

We are doing a study at UMass Amherst to investigate the speech and vocal quality of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

We are looking for individuals who:
-Are between the ages of 14 to 18 years old and have ASD
-Communicate verbally
-Have no known uncorrected hearing or visual deficits
-Have no cranial-facial or other structural differences
-Have no history within the past 6 months of self injury, injury to others, or damage to property.

**Participants will receive a $40 gift card**

All testing will take place on the UMass Amherst campus. However, if you want to participate, but cannot travel to Amherst for testing, please let us know and we will try to make accommodations. Only one session that will take approximately 2 hours is required. During the study session, you or your son/daugher will be given some speech, language, and listening tests and will engage in conversations. Short breaks will be provided as needed. This study has been approved by the University’s office for the protection of human subjects (IRB).

CHILDREN with AUTISM

We are studying speech and language characteristics of children with Autism. If you have a child with Autism, your child might qualify if:
-are between 4 to 7 years of age and diagnosed with Autism
-have no cranio-facial or other structural differences (e.g., cleft palate)
-vocalize (communicate with at least 10 words orally and at least 50 words using some other form of communication, such as PECS, ASL, AT/AAC, etc.)
-have no known uncorrected hearing or visual deficits
-have no history within the past 6 months of self-injury or injury to others or damage to property
Participants will be paid $25 upon completion of all testing.

The study requires 1 session (approximately 1 hour). All testing will take place on the University of Massachusetts-Amherst campus. We will give rewards (parent/guardian approved items) such as stickers to make the experience fun and rewarding for your child. Test findings will be forwarded to the parent/guardian at their request.

You may qualify for this study if you are:
-Between 14 to 17 years of age
-Currently enrolled in high-school
-A student with Autism

You will be asked to complete a short survey on a secure site. If you agree to participate and meet inclusion criteria, you will be given a link to the survey. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Your responses will help us gain information about the daily life of high-school students with Autism and Social Communicative Disorder.
