Russell chose to initiate predoctoral training at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He then completed his bachelor's degree in general business administration at Mississippi State University. After completing his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of Mississippi, he continued his dental education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received Specialty Certification in Orthodontics. Dr. Russell joined the orthodontic practice of his father, Dr. John Russell, Jr., in 1988 and has continued the practice since his father's retirement.
