My mom had this poem hanging in her bedroom. I understand it better now that I’m a mother.

On Children
By Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

I’m going through a rebrand, which is both odd and illuminating.

There’s something so weird about turning yourself into a “brand.” And also, choosing one little icon to represent me has been wildly eye-opening.

I showed a few flower options to a colleague and he liked “the one that is Celtic and symmetrical.”

And I thought: that is so not me.

Then when I landed on the poppy, he said, “That’s too feminine.” And I thought, well yes. exactly!

California poppies are illegal to pick here. They are meant to be seen in the wild and that’s what I love about them.

They belong on hillsides, along trails, in open fields, opening and closing with the light. That feels like me. I can be a little unruly too.

I close up when I need to protect my energy and open again to give all I’ve got.

This is what choosing a symbol can do.

I’ve been working on what feels true. And I want you to do that too.

It’s: what feels tru

So if you are choosing a symbol for your work, your brand, or just your own understanding of yourself, start with what feels right inside of you.

You can go pretty deep with just an icon.

And at the end of the day, no AI, no designer, no branding expert gets to decide what represents you.

You have to listen for the thing that rings true. For me, it’s the California poppy.

Come join me for a workshop at !

October 9–11, 2026, I’ll be leading Wise Effort: Reclaim Your Energy and Realign Your Life—an experiential retreat designed to help you reconnect with what truly matters and focus your energy more wisely.

Together, we’ll explore the patterns that keep us stuck in unwise effort, clarify your core values, and practice opening up to a more aligned way of living, working, and relating.

Through reflection, group exercises, and live coaching, you’ll leave with practical tools to create a life that feels more grounded, intentional, and true to you.

I’d love for you to join me in beautiful Big Sur.

ACT BootCamp NYC. Four immersive days of deep diving into Acceptance and Commitment Therapy— theory, practice, experiential work, live demos, role plays, process work, and a whole lot of humanity. An incredible group of clinicians joined us from around the world to train together in psychological flexibility and learn how to bring ACT alive in the therapy room.

It’s a true honor to co-lead alongside Steven C. Hayes, one of the founders of ACT, along with Robyn Walser and Miranda Morris—some of the world’s premier ACT therapists and trainers.

I lead the final day on Process-Based Therapy—the cutting-edge future of psychotherapy—where we move beyond protocols and focus on the processes that actually drive change.

Grateful, inspired, and already looking forward to co-leading the next ACT BootCamps in Ohio and Los Angeles in 2026. Hope to see some of you there.

Last week a client walked into my new office, saw the cushions on the floor, and asked,

“Do you have a dog?”

I was slightly insulted. And also…fair.

We don’t think about the floor as part of therapy. Chairs, yes. Couch, of course.
But the floor?

For me, it’s essential.
It changes how we relate to our bodies, to each other, to the work.

Here’s how I set it up:
– A few zafu cushions and sheepskins in the corner, easy to pull out
– Enough open space for legs up the wall, lying down, or sitting across from a client

And here’s how I use it:
– Stretching between sessions
– Legs up the wall, squats, down dogs—taking care of my body in the middle of a clinical day
– A reading nook (placed right next to the books I return to)
– Client guided visualizations and meditation
– Floor-based sessions with clients
– Video sessions from the ground (low ottoman = makeshift desk)

Make a floor space in your home, workplace, or for your video therapy session if you are a client. Caring for your body is caring for your mind.

Have you heard of a Johari window?

There’s four quadrants:
1. What you know and what others know
2. What you see but others don’t
3. What others know about you but you don’t see
4. What neither of you see yet

Have some friends who serve as third windows for you (or a great therapist!) and honor your second window (what you see, your genius).

Then go explore the unknown. That is where wisdom and magic happens.

Things I made sure to include in my therapy office:

– A tea station where clients can choose their own tea (I love 🍵)
– Fresh flowers every week—when you’re anxious or low, it helps to have something alive in the room 🌿
– Books to lend, or to point clients toward podcast episodes we can explore together 📚🎧
– Space to sit or lie on the floor for grounding
– A desk that hides my podcast equipment (and the inevitable mess 🙃)
– Paintings of our local landscape by a Santa Barbara artist 🖼️
– A couch positioned at an angle—so clients can choose connection or a bit more space

I believe in the healing power of setting and place. It’s wise effort to create one that both you and your clients can get curious and open up in.

Glad to be back!
