Borealis LIFE

Borealis LIFE We provide individualized, compassionate gynecologic care, specializing in endometriosis & fibroids. Serving Alaska. Hi!

I’m Dr. Matthew A Lindemann, OB-GYN for over 20 years and founder of Borealis LIFE. I specialize in minimally invasive gynecology, pelvic pain, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids. For years I have had the pleasure of helping thousands of women with endometriosis. I want every patient to feel better about her life, or her condition, when she walks out of my office than when she walked in. We take g

reat pride in our patient-centered care. We want all of our patients to feel connected and cared for. We use a narrative approach to understand who our patients are, not just their diseases or symptoms. We get to know you as a person and offer a carefully developed treatment plan, adjusted to fit your unique situation.

This review 🥹. We know we say it all the time, but this is exactly what your experience SHOULD be when working with any provider. We want you to feel heard and to know that we are here to work WITH you, not against you. If you've been struggling with heavy periods and/or pelvic pain, please reach out to our office so we can get you the care you deserve.

When you've been struggling with the chronic pain that comes with endometriosis, you become a pro at what to have on hand to get through the next flare. We'd love to know what you're keeping in your endo emergency kit so others can start building their own. From those of us at Borealis LIFE that have struggled with endo ourselves, here are a few of our go to's:

• TENS machine! Such a good one to have on hand when your cramps are on par with birthing an elephant (no big deal 😅).

• Meds for pain/inflammation. That's a personal preference, but for many it's necessary when struggling with chronic pain.

• Hot water bottle or heating pad. Make sure to take breaks so you don't burn yourself!

• A distraction. Also a personal preference, but for me (Ashton - marketing here) having something to do with my hands is a requirement. Turning on the tv/music and knitting was usually my go to.

• Anything to keep you hydrated.

• Snacks. Especially important (like hydration) when you're bleeding.

We all know this, but sometimes it's hard to actually take action when it comes to our health. We continue to put others before ourselve and tell ourselves we'll get to it later. The issue with that mindset though, is that your disease/illness is only going to get worse the longer you leave it. We know answers are scary, but not knowing is scarier. You're allowed to prioritize yourself and ask for help. If you're looking for an endometriosis or fibroid specialist in the Anchorage, Alaska area (and beyond!), we'd love to be the team that starts your care journey. It's time to prioritize your health so you can live life to the fullest!

What is one piece of advice you'd give someone that is newly diagnosed with endo? Being newly diagnosed can be so scary, but hearing from others that suffer with the same disease as you can be very comforting. Knowing that you aren't alone in this and that there's a whole community of folks going through the exact same thing can sometimes help us get through some of the hardest days.

So, what's your advice? We'd love to hear!

The uncomfortable dance of wanting to know and not wanting to know is real. You want answers because you're tired of feeling this way, but you also know that an answer is going to change everything. We know getting a diagnosis is so scary, but not knowing why you're suffering is worse. Instead of focusing on the what ifs of being diagnosed, try to focus on the good that comes with it.

What positives come with a diagnosis?

- You can stop feeling like you're losing your mind. Knowing that you were right all along releases such a heavy weight from your shoulders. You know your body better than anyone, and now you have answers.

- You can finally start planning next steps. A diagnosis means you can plan for your future and the steps you need to take to feel better.

- You can receive the care you need. Having a diagnosis opens up so many more doors to specialists and providers that KNOW what you're dealing with. They're going to be key players in your future plans.

Is a diagnosis scary? Absolutely. Is it better than wondering, gaslighting yourself, and feeling like nothing is ever going to change? Also yes.

At Borealis LIFE we SEE you and we want to help you find answers. You can do this and we're going to help you the whole way through.

Chronic illness changes more than your body. It changes how you plan your days.
How far ahead you’re willing to commit. How often you cancel. How much you explain, or stop explaining. There’s a quiet grief in that comes with that. Not just for the pain itself, but for the version of your life that felt easier, more predictable, more yours.

It's okay to miss having energy without calculating it. Saying yes without hesitation. Feeling understood without needing to justify the changes you've had to make to protect your body.

Because so much of this is invisible, that grief often goes unrecognized, even by the people closest to you. It’s a real loss, even if no one else can see it. You're allowed to hold space and grieve for the person you were and the life that you'd envisioned.
