Is intermittent fasting good for women with PCOS?
The answer is: it depends.
Intermittent fasting can be a helpful tool for some women with PCOS because it may help improve insulin sensitivity, reduce insulin levels, and support weight loss.
But it’s not the magic solution social media makes it out to be.
In my practice, I see women make one of two mistakes:
❌ They fast for too long and end up overeating later.
❌ They use fasting while already under-eating, stressed, sleep-deprived, and hormonally depleted.
If you have PCOS, fasting works best when:
✔️ Your meals contain enough protein
✔️ You’re eating enough overall calories
✔️ You’re prioritizing sleep
✔️ You’re strength training regularly
✔️ You’re managing stress
Remember: fasting is a tool, not a requirement.
You can improve insulin resistance without fasting. And for some women, especially those dealing with high stress, poor sleep, or hormonal imbalances, aggressive fasting may actually make symptoms worse.
The goal isn’t to eat less.
The goal is to improve how your body responds to insulin and support your hormones in a sustainable way.
