March is National Endometriosis Awareness Month.
Endometriosis affects an estimated 176 million women around the globe. Some of the symptoms of endometriosis include:
-Painful sexual in*******se
-Pain during pelvic examinations
-Severe pain before and during menstruation
-Pain during urination or a bowel movement
-Excessive bleeding
-Infertility
Symptoms of endometriosis can begin as early as age 12 and persist into the 60s. Most patients are diagnosed between ages 25 and 35, in part because the average delay from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis is about 10 years. This delay often occurs because symptoms are mistaken for other conditions or dismissed as a “normal” part of being female. When this dismissal comes from a healthcare professional, it is sometimes referred to as “medical gaslighting.”
Recognized risk factors for endometriosis include:
-An immediate family member with endometriosis
-An abnormal uterus
-Menstruation that begins before the age of 11
-Shorter menstrual periods, lasting less than 27 days on average
-Heavy menstruation that lasts for more than one week
If you’re experiencing symptoms of endometriosis, talk with your doctor. While several tests may be used, a definitive diagnosis is ultimately made through surgery. However, an excellent first step toward finding answers is a Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis (DIE) ultrasound—an effective, proven, non-invasive, and relatively low-cost option.
There are estimated to be fewer than 50 centers in the United States that perform true, detailed Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis (DIE) ultrasound, with fewer than 15 located on the West Coast. Advanced Sonograms is the only ultrasound imaging facility in Alaska offering this highly specialized service, backed by three years of experience and surgical correlation.
