Supporting your heart doesn't require extreme workouts or hours at the gym. Everyday activities like gardening, carrying groceries, cleaning, lifting, or walking the dog all contribute to heart health and overall fitness.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week. Regular movement can help lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The key is consistency: find activities you enjoy and make movement part of your routine.

Endocarditis is a serious infection of the inner lining of the heart or heart valves, often caused when bacteria enter the bloodstream and attach to damaged areas of the heart. While uncommon, it can become life-threatening if left untreated.

Symptoms may include fatigue, fever, chills, shortness of breath, swelling in the legs or feet, and unexplained weight loss. People with existing heart conditions or artificial heart valves may face higher risk.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important to help prevent complications such as valve damage, stroke, or heart failure.

Happy Pet Appreciation Week! We're celebrating our furry companions and the invaluable role they play in our lives. Did you know that pets offer more than companionship? Research shows that having a furry friend can significantly improve various aspects of our lives. Pets can improve our physical health by encouraging a more active lifestyle. They can also boost our mental well-being and provide emotional support. When we pet our animals, it triggers a release of endorphins, and can even lower blood pressure.

National Best Friends Day is a great reminder that the people closest to us can play an important role in supporting heart health and overall wellness. If you have someone close to you who is living with heart disease, there are many ways you can offer support!

• Be an active listener
• Stay active together through walking, hiking, or exercise
• Encourage heart-healthy meals and better nutrition choices
• Support them in managing stress and improving sleep
• Help them keep up with regular heart screenings and preventive care
• Recognize early warning signs of heart disease and recommend that they seek care promptly

We're proud to share that our very own Dr. Jake Kelly was recently featured in Business Insider, where he offers his personal take on four habits that keep his—and his patients'—hearts in good shape.

Dr. Kelly opens up about his own health journey, from gaining 30 pounds his freshman year of college to becoming a triathlete, and how that experience shaped the authentic, practical advice he brings to his patients. His four go-to habits: Moving his body first thing in the morning, taking short movement breaks throughout the day to avoid prolonged sitting, eating balanced meals that include all three macronutrients rather than chasing diet trends, and maintaining a consistent sleep routine.

His primary message is that our health comes down to our habits, and that good or bad, habits compound over time. So the earlier you start adding healthy habits to your daily routine, the better.

Although the weather had other plans, we're proud that our AHVI team showed up on May 9 for the American Lung Association Clean Air Challenge at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, riding in support of lung health and clean air for all Alaskans.

A special shoutout to Dr. Feringa, who tackled the 100-mile route through challenging weather conditions and a flat tire, and still finished strong! We loved seeing and hearing from patients and their family members, who stopped by our booth to share their stories.

Heart health and lung health are deeply connected, and we're honored to stand alongside the American Lung Association in raising critical funds for lung disease research, clean air advocacy, and education here in Alaska. A huge thanks to everyone who pledged in support of our team!
