A new clinical trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that medically tailored meals based on traditional Diné (Navajo) foods helped reduce hospitalizations and emergency department visits among people living with heart failure in the rural Navajo Nation.

The MUTTON-HF randomized clinical trial followed 206 adults who received two culturally appropriate meals each day for eight weeks. The meals included traditional foods such as mutton, beans, and squash and were developed through partnerships with local experts to reflect Diné food traditions.

Researchers found that participants receiving the meals experienced fewer combined hospital and emergency department visits, fewer hospitalizations related to heart failure, improvements in blood pressure, weight, and food security, and a better overall quality of life compared with those receiving standard care.

The study is the first randomized clinical trial to evaluate an Indigenous food-as-medicine approach for heart failure and highlights how culturally informed healthcare can support better health outcomes while respecting community traditions.

How can traditional Indigenous foods continue to play a role in improving community health today? 🌽❤️

What a JUNE!!!?

So busy, but so good! I was invited to teach two watercolor workshops Analemma Wines (the best vineyard and winery in the )

As always, I had an amazing time, great vibes all around, and not a minute to paint my own painting while I was teaching the skills building class last week, so when I got home I sat down with a pic I snapped on the most lovely day that I taught the watercolor nature journal class two weeks before… and voila!

I should have used the nice block paper because it turned out so good!

I’m so happy with this memory that I get to look at to remind me of slow afternoons immersed within the Analemma estate!

More watercolor workshops are being planned for later this season, and I hope to see some regular faces…new ones are always more than welcome as well, of course!

I’m looking forward to sharing my love for nature, visual arts, learning, and gratitude, again soon!

If you’d like to host a private or group workshop/lesson, send me a DM!
