Alaska Pharmacy Association - AKPhA

Alaska Pharmacy Association - AKPhA The mission of the Alaska Pharmacy Association is to preserve, promote and lead the profession of pharmacy in Alaska.

Whether you are from Southeast, Southcentral or the Interior, members of the Board comprise each region to ensure equal representation. AkPhA was founded in 1956 when the state was still a territory. Although the American Pharmaceutical Association recognized the association in 1957, it fell dormant for a number of years and reemerged in 1966. Since that time, AkPhA has held annual conventions in Anchorage traditionally around the Fur Rendezvous celebration.

AKPhA Membership Spotlight! Meet Janel Abo!

"Growing up in Anchorage, it has given me a deep appreciation for community, culture, and connection. I have always been passionate about making a positive impact in the community I was raised in. I am a proud graduate from Idaho State University College of Pharmacy, where I developed the foundation for my career in pharmacy and patient care.

I am honored to work at Southcentral Foundation, where I have the privilege of giving back to the Alaska Native and Native American community. Being able to support the health and well-being of people in my home state is one of the most meaningful aspects of my work. I am passionate about improving patient care and I plan to pursue more opportunities to drive better health outcomes.

Outside of work, you can find me traveling around the world any chance I get. My favorite place to visit is Japan.

I am excited to be apart of the pharmacy profession in Alaska and I look forward to seeing how the pharmacy field advances!"

Your Monthly Med Safety Tip from APMS:

Safety Tip: Allergy Documentation and Verification

Incomplete or outdated allergy information contributes to preventable harm.

Verify allergies at every patient encounter.
Document reaction type, not just "allergy".
Distinguish side effects from true allergies.

Does your system support meaningful clinical decision-making?

For more information, or to get your Medication Safety and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program started, visit the APMS site at www.medicationsafety.org or give APMS a call at (866)365-7472.
