It was wonderful to participate in the RHTP regional convenings in Cordova and Dillingham over the past couple of weeks. Listening to the discussions around both challenges and potential solutions underscored the need to have a more connected health system while still retaining independence in governance and practice. We are excited to be part of solutions that lie at that intersection!

Team Spotlight: Carlin Evanoff

If you've run into us at a conference, collaborated with us on a project, or partnered with us on a health data initiative, there's a good chance you've connected with Carlin Evanoff, Director of Clinical Informatics.

Since joining healthEconnect Alaska in 2019, Carlin has helped bring together healthcare organizations, community partners, and technical teams to advance innovative health data solutions across Alaska. She also works on the technical side of the Health Information Exchange (HIE), helping bring new information into the HIE and ensuring the data is accurate, complete, and actionable.

"I really love connecting people-clinicians, partners and communities- around creating and shaping health information technology for Alaska."

For Carlin, the importance of health information sharing is both professional and personal. "Most of us have experienced the consequences of fragmented or siloed medical records in our personal life and I am incredibly passionate about ensuring that every Alaskan's treatment team has the information they need to provide them the best care possible. As someone who also works in healthcare, I am also passionate about improving efficiency and access to health records."

Beyond healthcare and technology, Carlin says it's the people who make Alaska special. "My absolute favorite thing about Alaska is the people and the community we create."

We're grateful for Carlin's leadership, expertise, and dedication to improving health information sharing across Alaska.

At the Mat-Su Regional Health Transformation Project convening last week, we were presented with data showing that cancer remains the leading cause of death in both the Mat-Su Borough and Alaska.*

Early detection and treatment are a key piece of changing that statistic. Alaskans commonly get care across systems, so data is fragmented. As this study reinforces, self-reported data has limitations. Health Information Exchanges can help connect the dots and support patients in getting the preventive screenings that can save lives.

Board Spotlight: Chad Jensen

healthEconnect Alaska’s reach across the state is strengthened by our Board of Directors, whose leadership and connection to Alaska’s health care community help guide our work.

Chad Jensen serves as Secretary for healthEconnect Alaska’s board of directors and is the Executive Office Manager at LaTouche Pediatrics, LLC. Chad has been involved with healthEconnect in some capacity since its early beginnings.

Chad serves on the board because of his passion for improving coordinated, patient-centered care across Alaska. “HealthEconnect Alaska’s work inspires me by reducing unnecessary repeat procedures and labs, lowering healthcare costs, and ultimately improving outcomes for patients and providers alike.”

He’s also passionate about the technology and workflow side of health information exchange. “I enjoy the IT side of this work—especially finding ways to streamline health information sharing so it better supports provider workflows. That efficiency ultimately leads to more informed decisions and improved patient outcomes, which is what makes healthEconnect Alaska’s mission so meaningful to me.”

Outside of work, Chad appreciates both Alaska’s scenery and its sense of connection. “I love how accessible the outdoors is in Alaska—you’re never far from incredible scenery and adventure. I also appreciate how, even in such a vast place, conversations often lead to a shared connection, making the community feel smaller and more connected.”

We’re grateful for Chad’s leadership and long-standing involvement with healthEconnect Alaska, as well as the guidance our board provides in helping shape the direction of the organization.

Did you know that our HIE Portal includes a tool that provides near real-time visibility into patient encounters across participating facilities?

Population Explorer is an encounter notification tool that supports healthcare teams in managing follow-ups, discharge planning, and care coordination more efficiently.

To help users get started, we created a comprehensive training video and companion PDF guide that walk through:

🔹 The purpose and benefits of Population Explorer
🔹 How to access and configure it
🔹 How to navigate it
🔹 How to use filters to prioritize follow-up work
🔹 How to use downloads or the built-in tracking tool to manage follow-up activity

Our video condenses a full 1-hour training into just 10 minutes, making it a quick and practical introduction for both new and existing users.

We’re proud to serve as Alaska’s state-designated Health Information Exchange (HIE) and to partner with the State of Alaska in advancing secure, connected health information sharing across our healthcare system.

This legislation helps modernize Alaska law to better support how healthcare providers securely exchange health information today, helping care teams access the information they are already permitted to use under HIPAA more efficiently and comprehensively.

At healthEconnect Alaska, we remain committed to safeguarding patient information while supporting more coordinated, informed, and effective care for Alaskans across the state.

The original law establishing digital health records in Alaska was enacted in 2009, and state legislators are updating it.

Health Information Exchange in action:

Alex’s story is an example inspired by real situations experienced by patients and care teams across Alaska. It illustrates how Health Information Exchange can support whole-person care by helping providers identify health-related social needs and connect individuals to resources like food and housing.

The story is fictional. The impact is real.
