Home care. Assisted living. Skilled nursing. Most families assume it's one scale — a little help on one end, a lot on the other.

It isn't. They're three different answers to three different problems.

Home care sends somebody to the house he already lives in. Assisted living means moving into a place where the help is part of daily life. Skilled nursing is a licensed medical facility with nurses on site around the clock.

So the question isn't "how much help does he need." It's what's actually broken.

Does the house still work? If he gets around fine and sleeps through the night, home care may be exactly right — and we'll tell you that.

Has the house become the problem? Stairs he's got no business on, a bathroom you can't make safe, nights with nobody there, days where he doesn't talk to a soul? More hours won't fix a building, and they won't fix being alone.

Does he need a caregiver or a nurse? That one's for his doctor, not a brochure.

You called it checking on Mama. Running her to the doctor. Handling the yard while you were out there anyway. Then it was the mail, the bills, the pills, the appointments, the two-hour drive most Saturdays, and the phone face-up on the nightstand in case it rings.

You've never once used the word. But it has a name, and 63 million Americans are doing it right now — about one in four adults, averaging 27 hours a week.

Here's the number worth sitting with: one in five of them rate their own health as fair or poor.

So, honestly — when did you last see your own doctor? Not scheduled it. Went.

Football starts back in a couple of weeks. Count how many you made it to last year.

Labor Day weekend is nearly here, and for a lot of families it's the one weekend everybody actually lands in the same place. If there's a conversation your family has been dancing around since spring, that's usually when it gets said.

Sometimes the best medicine is a little fresh air, sunshine, movement, and good company. ☀️⛳️💛

One of our residents had been feeling a little down because he wanted more time outdoors and more opportunities to get up and moving. So this morning, we decided to change the scenery and headed out to the Andrews County Golf Course! 🏌️‍♂️

We soaked up the sunshine, got some movement in, shared plenty of laughs, and just enjoyed being OUT and about. These are the moments that remind us that caring for someone is about so much more than meeting their daily needs—it’s about listening to what brings them joy and helping make it happen. 💛🐝

Safe to say, this morning was a hole-in-one! ⛳️🐝

She raised five kids on a budget that never quite worked. She knew which one needed watching. She could feed thirty people out of a church kitchen without breaking a sweat, and she did it for thirty years. When something went wrong, she was the one people called.

Now think about the last time anybody asked her a real question.

Not "how are you feeling." Not "did you eat." An actual question, about something she knows, where you needed the answer and she had it.

For most of us it's been a while. Nobody decides to do it. But at some point the traffic reverses — the questions stop coming toward her and start going around her. Decisions get made and then reported.

She notices. She always notices.

Tomorrow is National Senior Citizens Day. When Reagan signed the proclamation in 1988, the wording thanked older Americans for what they'd achieved — and then, in the same sentence, for all they continue to accomplish. Present tense.

So don't send a card. Ask her something. Being asked is worth more than being thanked.

Ask your father what he had for supper last night and he might have to think about it.

Ask him who his third-grade teacher was and the name comes out right away.

That's not a slip. Researchers describe something called the reminiscence bump — adults recall the years between about ten and thirty more sharply than any stretch that follows, because that's when everything was happening for the first time. The ten-thousandth ordinary workday leaves nothing behind. The first day of third grade leaves a permanent mark.

The buses went back on the road this week, which makes August the best month of the year to ask.

Questions that work better than "tell me about growing up":

Who was your first-grade teacher? How did you get to school? What did you carry your lunch in? What did the school smell like? Did you ever miss school to work — doing what? Did you play ball? What did you want to be back then?

Take photographs with you if you have them. Take pictures of your own kids on their first day this week — setting the two side by side is usually where the good stories come loose.

Write the answers down. Every family has one story they wish somebody had gotten on paper.

Over the phone, he's got it handled. He's always got it handled.

Then you drive down in August and inside of an hour you've counted four things he never mentioned. The milk turned two weeks ago. There's a stack of second notices by the door. He touches the furniture crossing the room now. There's a bruise on his forearm and the explanation comes a little too fast.

He wasn't putting one over on you. Decline this slow is almost impossible to see from the inside, and anybody can hold it together for a ten-minute call.

August is when Texas families find out — because August is when we're finally standing in the kitchen instead of talking on the phone.
