Here is something I have been looking forward to telling parents about. Until last fall, a pair of glasses could only correct a child's nearsightedness. Now there is a lens that also slows it down.

Essilor Stellest is the first eyeglass lens the FDA has authorized to slow the progression of myopia in kids. It looks and wears like a regular pair of glasses, with no drops and no contact lenses to manage. The authorization covers children who start between ages 6 and 12, worn full time.

Why that matters: nearsightedness tends to climb through the school years, and higher prescriptions later in life carry more eye health risk. Slowing it down early is one of the better things we can do for a kid's long-term vision.

We fit Stellest right here in Ankeny. If your child's prescription has been changing every year, ask us about it at their next exam.

A few weeks ago I posted about how blinking is what spreads your tear film across the eye. Here's the part I left out: a blink only works if the eyelid can actually close.

As we age, the ring of muscle around the eye loosens, and the lower lid goes slack with it. The blink stops finishing. You still blink the same number of times, but the lid never quite completes the sweep, so the tear film doesn't spread evenly and the oil glands along the lid margin stop getting expressed properly. That's dry eye with a mechanical cause, and no amount of artificial tears fixes a lid that isn't closing.

OptiLift treats the muscle rather than the symptom. It uses dynamic muscle stimulation to tone the orbicularis, that ring of muscle around your eye, over four short weekly sessions. In the published study, tear break-up time improved by 286% and patients' dry eye symptom scores dropped by more than half. No surgery, no needles, no downtime.

It also tightens the skin there, which people notice. But that's the side effect, not the point.

If your eyes are dry and drops haven't done much, this might be why. Ask me at your next visit. prairievieweyecare.com

If your child is starting kindergarten or third grade this fall, Iowa requires a vision screening form before they enroll. It goes back to the school, and there's a window: the screening is valid from one year before enrollment up to six months after.

We can take care of that form here. But I'd rather you know what you're actually getting, because a screening and an exam are not the same thing.

A screening checks how well your child sees across the room. That's it. A kid can pass at 20/20 and still struggle to focus up close, or have eyes that don't team well together. That shows up as skipping lines, losing their place, headaches after homework, or quietly avoiding reading. It usually gets read as an attention problem. Often enough it's a vision problem.

The one I most want to catch early is nearsightedness, because it doesn't hold still. When a prescription climbs year after year, that isn't just thicker lenses. Higher myopia carries real long-term risk to the retina later in life, and this is what's changed recently: we can slow that progression down. It works better the earlier we start.

Prairie View Eyecare will be closed Thursday morning, July 23 while our team trains on our upgraded Optomap retinal camera. We'll reopen at 9:30 AM.

You already know the Optomap, the quick scan of the back of your eye. Our new version uses the latest technology to capture even more detail, so we can see and tell you more about your eye health at your visit.

Thanks for your patience. Book anytime at prairievieweyecare.com.

Here's something I tell patients almost every day: when you're on a screen, your blink rate drops by as much as 70%. Measured studies put people around 18 to 22 blinks a minute at rest and down to 4 to 7 in front of a computer. You never notice it. Your eyes do.

Why that matters is anatomy most people never learn. Your cornea, the clear front surface of your eye, has no blood supply at all. It pulls oxygen straight out of the air, dissolved in your tear film. Blinking is what spreads that film back across the surface and keeps it working. Blink less and the film thins out and evaporates between refreshes. That's the gritty, tired, blurry feeling at the end of a screen day.

Now, the standard advice is to take breaks and blink more. It's good advice. It's also advice almost nobody actually follows for more than about two days, myself included. So I'd rather tell you what works when willpower doesn't.

Start with a quality artificial tear, and use it before your eyes feel dry rather than after. If you're reaching for drops more than a few times a day, that's worth a conversation, because at that point you're managing a symptom instead of treating a cause. Chronic dry eye is usually the oil glands in your eyelids not doing their job, and that's something we can actually treat here in the office rather than something you have to live with.

If your eyes are worn out by five o'clock most days, bring it up at your next exam. It's a fixable problem more often than people expect. prairievieweyecare.com

A patient shared this with us after finishing her dry eye treatment, and it's the kind of note that makes the whole team smile. Before OptiLight IPL and OptiLift, her eyes burned and felt dry all the time. After, in her words: "No burning! Eyes don't feel really dry anymore."

What I love most is that she's been telling friends how she feels now, because they remember how she felt before. That's exactly why we brought these treatments in-house: real relief for people who've been putting up with gritty, tired, burning eyes for years.

If that sounds like you, let's talk about whether OptiLight or OptiLift is a fit. Book at prairievieweyecare.com. (Shared with her permission.)

We don't take this for granted. Being voted Ankeny's best in optometry through CommunityVotes means the world to us, because it comes straight from you, the people we get to take care of every day.

Every exam, every pair of glasses, every "I can finally see the leaves on the trees again" moment is the reason we do this. Thank you for trusting us with your eyes and for telling your neighbors about us.

And to make it three years in a row? We're floored. From all of us at Prairie View Eyecare, thank you, Ankeny. We're grateful.
