At Michigan Medicine, we have an established history of generosity toward local communities. This month we are turning our attention towards supplying our kids with what they will need to go back to school.

Starting this month, we are holding a Back to School Drive for school-age children in the Washtenaw County area. Among the items needed are backpacks (noted as a significant need), calculators, pencil boxes/bags, loose leaf paper, mechanical pencils, etc. Hygiene products such as socks and underwear are also welcomed and in significant need.

Supplies can be purchased directly via our Amazon wish list (check the comments for the link), or supplies can also be dropped off at the North Campus Research Complex (2800 Plymouth Rd. Ann Arbor MI 48109) at Dock 90 along Huron Parkway, from now until Monday, September 7.

These efforts go a long way toward building bridges and connecting Michigan Medicine with the communities we are a part of and are privileged to serve.

Check the comments for our amazon wish list and help local students today!

At the Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools (RAHS), their Youth Advisory Councils (YACs) give students the opportunity to help shape health education programs and services for themselves and their peers at their school. YAC members share what's important to teens today, advocate for their peers, and help promote healthy choices throughout their school communities.

By listening to youth and partnering with them, RAHS is creating health services that are responsive, relevant, and centered around the needs of the students they serve.

Meet the People Behind the Care! Every day, the dedicated physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, behavioral health clinicians, medical assistants, and administrative professionals at Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools work together to support the health and well-being of youth and adolescents in our communities.

Whether they're providing a sports physical, helping a student manage asthma, offering counseling during a difficult time, or simply being a trusted adult to talk to, our staff is committed to delivering compassionate, youth-centered care where students need it most.

For this month, we'd like to cover the Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools (RAHS)!

RAHS provides comprehensive school-based healthcare for youth ages 21 and younger. From annual and sports physicals to immunizations, behavioral health services, vision care, and connections to community resources, our team helps remove barriers so youth and adolescents can thrive—in school and in life.

With 16 school-based health centers and a mobile vision and dental unit serving Genesee, Jackson, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties, quality healthcare is never far away. Best of all, adolescents do not need to attend a school with a RAHS health center to receive care, and services are available regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

Thanks to grant support from CHS, Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels is thrilled to be in its third year of offering summer produce boxes to clients who are at nutritional risk or don’t have other access to fruits and vegetables outside of their regular AAMOW deliveries. AAMOW is partnering once again with The Farm at Trinity Health Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels, and JFS of Washtenaw County to provide fresh, local produce for 60 AAMOW client households (in addition to 60 YMOW and 15 JFS clients) from July-October. The first produce boxes were delivered to clients with their regular meal deliveries on July 1, and there is already a lot of excitement! Boxes will be delivered to clients every two weeks and contain 5-8 fruits and vegetables that are easy to eat/prepare.

CHS's Volunteer Services team would like to thank Dr. David Miller, Julie Ishak, Tony Denton, and Dr. Paul Lee and their teams for taking the time to visit the department and engage with staff and volunteers. Their presence and genuine interest in our work were greatly appreciated. Their engagement reinforced the value of our volunteers' contributions and affirmed the meaningful role Volunteer Services plays in advancing the mission of Michigan Medicine. This leadership continues to foster an environment where our department can thrive and where individuals are inspired to give so generously of their time in service to our patients, families, and community.

Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels director, Courtney, was recently interviewed by David Fair on WEMU 89.1 about the work of Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels and the Big Hearts for Seniors event.

“I speak often with a lot of passion and care for the older adults in our community and think we are so fortunate that we get to live in a place that has been shaped by the hands and the contributions and the minds and the dedication and commitment of so many older adults in our community who we now have the privilege of serving and providing really good support for. And we want to be able to continue doing that.”

At the Adolescent Health Initiative’s upcoming Conference on Adolescent Health, they're offering something brand new to attendees. The AMPLIFY Youth Art Exhibition empowers young people to use art to transform the landscape of adolescent health.

More than just an art exhibit, AMPLIFY provides artists a stipend and guidance from a youth art consultant to help transform their ideas and experiences of health care into finished works of art. At the Conference’s Awards & Reception, AMPLIFY will create a space for dialogue – connecting health care professionals nationwide with the youth they serve and opening new pathways for understanding, collaboration, and change. After the Conference, the exhibit will tour to three different locations in southeast Michigan to engage with the community directly!

The AHI artists are working hard for their debut during the Conference, November 6-7 at Huntington Place in Detroit, MI. For more information on the Conference and AMPLIFY, visit MichMed.org/AHIConference
