To all the people-pleasing, self-abandoning women out there, here is what I wish I knew and believed (that you probably already instinctively know):

I’m a 47-year-old therapist and self-leadership coach for women.

What I wish I believed about people pleasing and self-abandonment in romantic relationships 15-25 years ago (that would have saved me a LOT of pain and heartache ❤️‍🩹):

✓ I already knew the answer. I was just too scared to act on it.

✓ I have a part. Other people have a part. I’m not responsible for doing their part.

✓ It’s okay to say “no, thank you,” even if others don’t like it.

✓ I don’t need to prove myself to be understood. Some people will misunderstand me anyway.

✓ Keeping the peace isn’t peaceful if I’m betraying myself to do it.

✓ Disappointing someone doesn’t always mean I’ve done something wrong.

✓ I am not obligated to make up for the love someone didn’t receive as a child.

✓ I don’t need everyone to agree with my choices in order to trust myself.

✓ I don’t need to abandon my myself when his hurt, defensiveness, or blame takes the focus off what I need.

You can be high functioning and still be struggling.

You can go to work. Take care of your family. Exercise. Meet deadlines. Get s**t done. And still feel a deep sense of darkness, apathy, hopelessness, or self-contempt underneath it all.

The audio in this Reel describes what is commonly called “high-functioning depression.” This post is for educational purposes only and isn’t intended to diagnose or treat depression or any other mental health condition.

And while depression can have many causes, I want to speak specifically to women who are also deeply unhappy for years, or even decades, in their romantic relationship.

Hopelessness (which is often a feature of depression) can convince us that nothing will ever change.
But nothing changes, if nothing changes.

You can:
Identify what you need.
Set one boundary.
Seek support.

There is hope for a life that feels better than the one you’re gritting your teeth to get through.
If you can relate, join me for a Girl Talk or send me a DM to get started.

If you’re seeing this and thinking, “This is me,” hit the follow button.

I’m Melanie, a licensed mental health clinician (LPC) and Self-Leadership Coach. I’m also a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), based on Dr. Elaine Aron’s research, so I know what it’s like to care deeply about everything and be highly attuned to the needs of everyone around us.

I help women accept their sensitivity without pathologizing it. We notice subtleties others may miss. We process things deeply. We’re emotionally responsive. And we can become easily overstimulated by our environments.

I like to think of sensitivity as a superpower, but it often feels like both a blessing and a burden, if we’re not careful.

And … you don’t have to be a Highly Sensitive Person to relate to abandoning yourself to keep the peace. Women are taught to be accommodating and helpful. We end up spending an enormous amount of energy analyzing, anticipating, sensing, and managing the mood of the room to make sure everyone else is okay. We make ourselves responsible for other people’s happiness and sadness.

We orbit around everyone else. And then one day, typically in midlife, there’s a still small voice saying “I don’t want to play this game for everyone else anymore.” I don’t want to keep abandoning myself to make everyone else comfortable.

If that’s where you are, I’m glad you found me. Join me for a Girl Talk (link in my Bio) or send me a DM.
