U-M Survival Flight provides services to the 48 continental states plus Canada and Mexico, to transport critically ill or injured patients. In addition, Survival Flight supports the University of Michigan Transplant Center's organ procurement team in its efforts to provide over 400 lifesaving transplants each year. Survival Flight flies over 160,000 miles each year and has flown over 4.5 million m

iles in the past 29 years. Its fleet includes three American Eurocopter EC155 helicopters and a Lear 75 Jet, as well as ground services provided by Huron Valley Ambulance.

We had the opportunity to join a nursing leadership panel with Michigan State University nursing students to talk about what leadership really looks like in healthcare. We discussed the importance of communication, advocating for your patients, supporting your teammates, staying curious, and never being afraid to ask questions. To all of the future nurses we met today—thank you for your thoughtful questions and enthusiasm. The future of nursing is in great hands, and we can’t wait to see the impact you’ll make.

Today we had the opportunity to welcome and host 1st–3rd year nursing students as part of an international exchange between Eastern Michigan University and nursing students from Taiwan.

This collaboration brings students together for a 3-week experience focused on learning, observation, and exposure to different healthcare systems and clinical environments. Glad to have you guys out!

This past Monday, our team had the opportunity to provide a Landing Zone Safety Class at Kellogg Community College.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated. Landing zone education plays a critical role in ensuring safe helicopter operations and successful patient care missions. We appreciate the opportunity to work with current and future EMS providers and share best practices for creating a safe landing environment.

Teams from Survival Flight and the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Program recently hosted an ECMO Survivors Picnic in Brighton, Michigan.

Approximately 300 people attended, including ECMO survivors of all ages, along with their families and friends. Attendees had the opportunity to see a Survival Flight helicopter up close and connect with members of the care team who supported them throughout their ECMO journey.

The U-M ECMO Program, the first of its kind in the nation, was established in 1980 and treated its first patient in 1981. Since treating its first ECMO patient in 1981, the University of Michigan ECMO Program has cared for more than 4,000 patients, making it one of the most experienced ECMO centers in the world.

Since our first mission in May 1982, Survival Flight has been extending the reach of Michigan Medicine, bringing critical care to patients across Michigan and beyond.

We are excited to share that several of our Survival Flight nurses have been published in the Air Medical Journal.

As healthcare professionals, we are committed not only to providing exceptional patient care, but also to advancing our profession through education, research, and the sharing of knowledge. Having the opportunity to contribute to a publication that reaches air medical providers around the world is truly an honor.

Every year, Survival Flight pauses to remember six extraordinary individuals who lost their lives in the June 4, 2007, Survival Flight transplant team plane crash in Lake Michigan. The crew was returning from a life-saving organ procurement mission when tragedy struck, taking the lives of dedicated healthcare professionals and aviators who were serving others until their very last moments. Today, we remember. We honor. We carry their legacy forward. 🚁💙
