It’s funny how a single, simple word can come to hold so much. Doc.
It’s what we call Nicole around here. But behind those three little letters is a life we are simply in awe of and awfully proud to know.
Long before Med 1, Nicole’s brilliant, boundless curiosity was already shaping her path. She dove deep into biotechnology, molecular biology, chemistry and psychology at the University of Michigan before earning her medical degree from Wayne State University. Her training carried her through OB/GYN and internal medicine, where she served as Chief Resident and Fellow. She poured that brilliance back into academic medicine, teaching and mentoring resident physicians, lecturing, pursuing research and developing new curricula in women’s health.
Her curiosity kept pulling her forward, into dermatology, procedural medicine and ultimately that fascinating, precise intersection of medical science and fine artistry.
True to her nature, caring for people has never stopped at the office door. Nicole helped found the Chelsea Grace Clinic to bring compassionate care to underserved patients, and she has poured her heart into Big Brothers Big Sisters, hospice and home care, children’s bereavement programs and Little Dresses for Africa. Wherever there was a need, wherever something she knew or something she could give might matter, she showed up.
Somewhere tucked inside all those demanding years is the part of Nicole she treasures most: her family. She is a devoted wife and an extraordinary mother. Her children have grown up right alongside her medical career and the building of Med 1, and anyone who knows her has witnessed firsthand how fiercely and completely she loves them.
Then there is the Doc we are so lucky to share our days with. Curious as ever, always learning, always teaching, and still capable of getting genuinely, delightfully excited over a gorgeous result. She is the kind of doctor who remembers your family, truly listens to the thing you’re struggling to put into words, and keeps thinking about you long after you’ve left her chair. She brings an artist’s eye backed by a physician’s extraordinary understanding of anatomy, balanced by an enormous respect for the trust you place in her hands.
Med 1 carries her fingerprints everywhere: in the medicine, the artistry, the uncompromising standards she sets, the people she has taught, and most of all, in the simple belief that taking care of someone should actually feel like being cared for.
Maybe that’s how three little letters came to mean the absolute world to us.
