The heartbreaking case of Lindsay Clancy has prompted important conversations about the mental health issues that some women can face during pregnancy and the months after giving birth.

“Mothers who are suffering postpartum illness are not alone, and there is help," says Maria Muzik, M.D., M.S., a professor in the U-M Medical School’s Departments of Psychiatry and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

"Together as a community we can take responsibility to help prevent such tragedies, as well as to alleviate the distress that is so common in the perinatal period.”

Muzik and her colleagues run special programs at U-M Health focused on perinatal mental health, which covers pregnancy and the year after delivery.

We’re excited to welcome Hanh N. Cottrell, M.D., to the Center for Reproductive Medicine at Bloomfield Hills starting August 3!

Dr. Cottrell is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist who brings deep expertise in infertility/fertility care, assisted reproductive technology/IVF, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) and endometriosis.

She believes the patient care experience is the heart of her work and is committed to creating a thoughtful, collaborative
environment where patients feel heard, respected and supported throughout their fertility journey.

After practicing in the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Cottrell is returning home to the Midwest to join the Bloomfield Hills office. She is excited to be part of a bright, dedicated team committed to expanding access to high-quality fertility care as the Bloomfield Hills office transitions to the new Troy Center for Specialty Care.

At a pregnancy anatomy scan, Taylor Taucher learned her son had severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a rare condition that limits lung development.

She was offered a highly specialized fetal procedure at U-M Health not widely available: Fetal Endoscopic Tracheal Occlusion (FETO).

While awake, she underwent surgery as a multidisciplinary team worked to improve her baby’s chances—before he was even born.

“You’ve got this, buddy,” she whispered during the procedure.

This Mother’s Day, Taucher is grateful for all the moments with Caiden, now a thriving, smiley toddler.

A heart attack 9 days after giving birth.

Nidhi, a healthy 41-year-old mom of four, had no warning signs until she experienced a rare condition called SCAD.

It’s underrecognized, but it’s a leading cause of heart attacks in women under 50 and the most common cause in pregnant and postpartum women.

Nidhi considers herself fortunate, crediting her recovery to quick medical care and access to U-M's Cardio-Obstetrics Program and the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.

This Mother’s Day, she’s sharing her story and a message: Trust your instincts

“The postpartum period is a busy and overwhelming time,” says Ashley Hesson, M.D., Ph.D. of the U-M Health Cardio-Obstetrics Program . "New moms are focused on their babies and pulled in many directions, but they also need to take care of themselves.

“What I hope women take from her story is the importance of trusting yourself and making sure you receive the care you need and deserve.”

At 14, Emily experienced a sudden cardiac arrest caused by a rare congenital heart condition.

Thanks to immediate intervention and expert care, she survived.

Nearly a decade later, she returned to the same care teams at U-M Health, this time to safely navigate pregnancy and motherhood.

She says it’s a gift to celebrate Mother’s Day with her young sons.

“My two boys are my whole world. Being here to watch them grow up is something I’ll always be thankful for.”

Last Mother’s Day, they were sitting in the NICU just weeks after giving birth, hoping and praying.

This year, they’re celebrating at home. 💕

Mom of three Sarah spent that day with her daughter Sage, born at just 22 weeks. Nearby, first-time mom Katie was at the bedside of her daughter Baela, who arrived at 25 weeks.

Sage and Baela were both born under a pound and faced extraordinary challenges. And both beat the odds.

Now, after celebrating their first birthdays, these two girls are giving their moms an extra special reason to celebrate this Mother’s Day.
