Now that Spring sports are in full swing, we are seeing a ton of kids getting offered Gatorade and other sport drinks or juice after their sporting events. This gives them a ton of sugar in a highly processed way, with good evidence that they do not need electrolytes unless their event is over an hour long. Even the low and no sugar versions aren't great because then they can't even absorb the electrolytes as well without the sugar. Here is a link to the fact sheet from the US Olympic and Paraolympic Committe on hydration, that says, "The best fluid to consume is water, which should be consumed throughout the day, during training, and at meal times. If training is > 60-90 minutes, a sports drink may
help replenish fluids and electrolytes lost in sweat and provide a quick energy source to sustain performance during intense and longer duration training sessions."

Happy public health week to everyone at Washtenaw County Health Department! We so appreciate everything you do, from guiding us through covid to keeping a lid on this ridiculous measles outbreak, and all the invisible things in between.

Yes we have a case of measles in Washtenaw County, from a person who traveled to Florida, which is likely where they contracted it. It is just one case so far, so our very trusted local health department and us do not recommend an early or extra dose of MMR vaccine right now. If there are more cases and that changes, we will call/text/email all of our families with eligible children and get you in quickly, so no need to call right now to check in about it.

The Washtenaw County Health Department works to promote health and prevent disease and injury for all in our community.

There's a recall of infant formula that contains botulism. It's not a popular type, but if you have any ByHeart infant formula, please see this article:

A Public Health Alerts report today describes the first known US multistate outbreak of infant botulism tied to powdered infant formula, identifying a clear link between illness in dozens of infants and exposure to a specific formula product.

This study at the University of Michigan is looking for kids ages 10-14 who do a sport and have anxiety, looking to see how the two interact with each other. It looks interesting. There's a simple form if you and your child(ren) are interested.

At the beginning of rollout of the rotavirus vaccine, I remember visiting at least two families whose babies were in the hospital who said they really wish they had gotten the vaccine, and now this announcement is going to make rotaviruses more prevalent in our communities again.

"Eliminating vital U.S. childhood vaccine recommendations without public discussion of the potential impacts on children in this country, or a transparent review of the data on which the changes were based, is a radical and dangerous decision," said a statement by epidemiologist Michael Osterholm, of the Vaccine Integrity Project and director of the University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy. "This wildly irresponsible decision will sow further doubt and confusion among parents and put children's lives at risk."

At least there’s this from the New York Times: “AHIP, a national trade organization for many health insurers, and Blue Cross Blue Shield both said all vaccines that the C.D.C. previously recommended would be covered through at least the end of 2026.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reducing the number of vaccines recommended for all children. The action follows a presidential memorandum ordering a review of the U.S. schedule.
