Anxiety has been a part of my life for a long time. Maybe since I entered the world.

It's taken me a lifetime to build a better relationship with it. Because in some ways it was easier to feel the anxiety than to explore what lay beneath it—big feelings.

And although I'd love to say I never get anxious anymore, the truth is it will always be a part of me. But learning to be curious, instead of critical, has helped me and my anxiety.

What's your relationship with anxiety?

My conversation with Annaliese Oatman, a multi-disciplinary artist and psychedelic somatic therapist, is still percolating within me.
Annaliese discusses her integrative approach to therapy, blending creative expression with clinical practice.

We discuss the importance of the relational field in therapy, particularly in psychedelic-assisted therapy, which amplifies the therapeutic process.

Annaliese shares her journey from studying philosophy to becoming a therapist, influenced by personal mystical experiences and her father's spiritual books.

We also dive into the significance of self-regulation and the need for therapists to honor our own boundaries.

Here’s a great quote from the interview:

“I like the idea that self-regulation is not one little practice that we engage in the moment that we're dysregulated, but it's a lifestyle.”
— Annalise Oatman

Lastly, Annaliese also stresses the value of trusting one's body and intuition in therapeutic work.

When you feel like there's so much going on that needs attention— locally, politically, socially, culturally, nationally—you might feel overwhelmed about where to start. Or you might wonder if your one voice matters.

In my conversation with Marie Newman, a former U.S. representative from Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, she shares that your voice matters. And she shares ideas on building a community for advocacy.

When you can slow down and get curious about what’s happening inside you, then you can work with and honor all your feelings. You can learn about your parts. And meet your sensitivities, and your fears, and all your feelings, with compassion and care.

Meditation and mindfulness practices are a great way to pause and notice what's going on inside you, and build your intuitive gifts.
