ASTER: SEPTEMBER’S LITTLE STAR

As summer fades, the aster opens like a tiny constellation.

PETAL & LORE

“Aster” comes from the Greek word for “star,” inspired by its ring of ray florets around a golden center. The New England aster—now classified as Symphyotrichum novae-angliae—blooms into autumn, offering late-season nectar and pollen to bees, butterflies and migrating monarchs.

Asters are also called Michaelmas daisies because many bloom near Michaelmas, the September 29 Feast of Saint Michael—a seasonal connection that helped associate them with September.

A BRUSH OF COLOR HISTORY

Their violet-blue hues recall cobalt violet, a synthetic artists’ pigment first developed in 1859. The flower never produced this pigment; bloom and paint simply share a luminous violet language.

FLOWER ESSENCE ENERGETICS

In a Flower Essence Society practitioner study, Showy Aster (Aster spectabilis) is associated with expressing truth and awakening the symbolic “star of self.”

Showy Aster is a different species from New England aster. Flower-essence energetics are practitioner-based spiritual interpretations, not medically proven effects.

🌿 Introducing Miniature Mixed Media Wearable Oshibana Art 🌿

I’ve been exploring a new way to bring my love of pressed flowers and botanical art into something you can wear, treasure, and display.

Each miniature piece begins with real pressed botanicals, thoughtfully arranged by hand and combined with resin and shimmering pieces of mother of pearl. I especially love how the shell catches the light—adding little flashes of iridescent color and giving each composition another layer of texture and movement.

Inspired by Oshibana, the art of creating imagery with pressed flowers and botanicals, every piece becomes its own tiny mixed-media botanical painting. No two are exactly alike. 🌸

And because I wanted them to feel like miniature works of art even when they aren’t being worn, each piece includes its own 3×3 canvas frame and mini easel. Wear your art when you want to—and place it back on its easel to enjoy as a tiny botanical artwork when you get home.

Week 2

SUNFLOWER: KEEPER OF GOLDEN LIGHT

The sunflower whispers a golden secret: its story began long before it illuminated European canvases.

PETAL & LORE

Indigenous peoples domesticated the common sunflower in eastern North America thousands of years ago. Beyond providing nourishing seeds, sunflower forms continue to appear in Indigenous decorative arts, including beadwork.

While they are growing, young sunflowers follow the sun from east to west, returning eastward during the night in anticipation of dawn. Once mature, their flower heads generally stop moving and remain facing the morning sun.

This is documented botanical and cultural history—not merely later floral symbolism.

A BRUSH OF COLOR HISTORY

Vincent van Gogh’s celebrated Sunflowers glowed through three shades of chrome yellow. This brilliant lead-chromate pigment helped nineteenth-century artists create intense sunlight effects, although some varieties can darken with age.

The flower did not produce the pigment; blossom and paint simply shared a remarkable golden language.
