This Tuesday, October 27th, our Wichmann Funeral Home Tri-County Chapel will be hosting our next in-person Grief Support Group, facilitated by our partners, HeartLight Center. This ongoing support group is open to anyone who has experienced a death, and is open to all types of losses and timelines. Meetings will be held the fourth Tuesday every month from 5-6:30pm. Have you ever wondered who signs the death certificate?

Families are often surprised to learn they do not sign the death certificate, and the funeral home does not sign it either.

Our staff gathers the personal information required for the certificate, including your loved one’s name, birthdate, birthplace, parents’ names, spouse, occupation, and education. A physician, medical examiner, or coroner reviews the medical record, confirms the cause and manner of death, and signs the certificate.

We combine the personal information with the signed medical portion before we submit the certificate to the proper office. This step can take longer than families expect, especially when a doctor needs time to review records or a medical examiner needs more information about the circumstances of the death.

A death certificate may look like one piece of paper, but families quickly learn how much depends on it. After the certificate is filed, we’ll help you order the certified copies needed for closing accounts, filing life insurance claims, transferring property, and accessing benefits.

After the funeral, heading back to school may be one of the first times a child steps into a place where everything seems “normal,” because the backpack is packed, the bell still rings, and the day moves forward. But it may not feel that way to them.

A quick note to the teacher can make the return a little easier. Let them know who died, what your child called them, and anything that might help if the day gets tough.
