Why are little girls so often taught to become smaller?

Not literally.

Smaller in their opinions.

Smaller in their needs.

Smaller in their anger.

Smaller in their ambitions.

Smaller in the amount of space they take up.

As a feminist therapist, I've spent nearly 30 years thinking about what happens when women learn that being “good” means being agreeable, accommodating, quiet, and self-sacrificing.

And I've seen how those messages can follow women into adulthood—showing up as anxiety, people-pleasing, self-doubt, relationship struggles, and feeling disconnected from their authentic selves.

Gloria Steinem once spoke about the freedom women can experience later in life when they finally become less constrained by the “demands of gender.”

But here's the question I keep coming back to:

Why should women have to wait five decades to get themselves back?
