BYTE BREAKDOWN: HOW EXERCISE CHANGES YOUR METABOLISM
You’ve probably heard that exercise “boosts your metabolism.”
That’s true—but the reality is a lot more interesting than the idea of turning your body into a 24-hour calorie-burning furnace.
🔥 During exercise:
Your working muscles need more ATP, so energy expenditure rises. How much depends on the exercise, intensity, duration, and your body.
⏱️ After exercise:
Your metabolism can remain temporarily elevated through EPOC—excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. Research suggests this “afterburn” is real, but usually modest.
💪 With consistent resistance training:
This is where things get interesting.
In one 9-month resistance-training study, average resting metabolic rate increased from approximately:
1,653 → 1,726 kcal/day
That’s an average increase of about 73 calories per day (~5%).
If that measured increase were maintained, mathematically that would equal approximately:
1 day: +73 kcal
1 week: +511 kcal
30 days: +2,190 kcal
1 year: +26,645 kcal
⚠️ Those numbers are an illustration, not a prediction of weight or fat loss. The increase developed through months of training—not overnight—and individual responses vary. Appetite, body weight, activity, training adaptations and energy compensation can all affect what happens in the real world.
And larger pooled research supports the overall idea: a 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis found resistance exercise produced a modest increase in resting metabolic rate compared with controls.
The takeaway?
Don’t exercise because you’re chasing a magical “afterburn.”
Exercise because consistent training creates adaptations that accumulate over time.
