Sometimes saying “I’m fine” is just easier than explaining the truth.
Because the truth might be:
I’m tired.
I’m overwhelmed.
I’m angry about something I keep pretending doesn’t bother me.
I need help, but I don’t know how to ask for it.
I don’t want to keep being the strong one today.
Or maybe… I don’t even know what I need yet.
When you’ve spent a long time taking care of everybody else, keeping the peace, pushing through, or simply surviving what needed to be survived, checking in with yourself can feel unfamiliar.
You can become so used to saying, “I’m good,” that nobody thinks to ask again, including you.
You are allowed to take time to explore what you're feeling and why. You don’t have to turn it into a breakthrough. You don’t have to fix anything tonight. You don’t even have to know what comes next.
Maybe the first step is simply admitting:
“Actually, I’m not fine.”
What would change if you didn't have to pretend you were okay today?
