This is no ugly duckling... ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿ“–

This is little gosling (temporarily named Ducky) was left at our door the other day. It looks as though a member of the community had seen this gosling by themselves and had taken them in overnight. Our Practice Manager found Ducky waiting at our door in the early morning. After speaking with our doctors and doing some research, it was the best plan to find Ducky a new home. Our Manager Rachael and Nurse Lead Katie took Ducky to a nearby pond to see if there were any potential Geese looking to adopt! Rachael and Katie saw about 3 Geese families around the pond. They spotted a family with goslings around the same age as Ducky. Upon Ducky seeing this family, he was chirping and ready to head over! As soon as those webbed feet hit the ground, he was off to say hi to his new family. One of the parent geese immediately went over to Ducky to check on him, the other goose did charge and hiss at Katie and Rachael. But this is good! The charging goose immediately recognized Ducky as a baby and did what geese do to protect their young. Rachael and Katie stayed and watched for a while. Ducky was fitting in just great! He was hanging out with the other goslings and was being protected by his new parents!

While this is a heartwarming story with a happy ending. Goslings should not be handled by humans and should be left where they are. Geese often nest far from water and walk their broods to wetlands. If the gosling is not in immediate danger, it is best to leave it, as the parents are likely nearby. If the bird is truly orphaned or injured, contact a local wildlife shelter or rehabilitation center while leaving the goose/gosling where they are.

Regardless, thank you to these kind hearted samaritans who kept Ducky safe until they were able to bring him to us. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™
