If you’ve ever experienced red, itchy, crusty eyelids, you may have a common condition called blepharitis, another cause of dry eye disease. This results from inflammation along the eyelid margins, sometimes caused by rosacea or Demodex. This can lead into an infection of the meibomian glands, also called a stye.

Common symptoms of blepharitis include:
•Red and swollen or oily eyelids
•Flakes and crusty debris along eyelashes
•Foamy tears
•Blurred vision that clears with blinking
•Burning or stinging sensation
•Eyelids ‘sticking’ together upon waking

You can manage blepharitis with these simple steps:
•Use an eyelid cleanser or wipe, or spray your eyelids with hypochlorous spray twice daily.
•Use a heat mask twice daily.
•Take an omega 3 supplement to reduce inflammation. (Make sure to clear this with your P*P as omega-3’s are natural blood thinners.)

If symptoms persist, see an optometrist for proper treatment. Your eye doctor may prescribe you for the treatment of Demodex blepharitis.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is one of the leading causes of dry eye disease — yet many people don’t realize they have it.

When the oil glands along the eyelids become blocked or stop working properly, tears evaporate too quickly, leading to:
• Burning or stinging eyes
• Blurry vision
• Redness
• Grittiness or irritation
• Watery eyes

Some common causes of MGD are:
•Blepharitis
•Hormonal changes
•Rosacea
•Excessive screen time

At home treatments include warm compresses, lid hygiene, staying hydrated, and taking frequent breaks from the screen.

If dry eye symptoms persist, see your optometrist to find the best treatment options for you.
