Before your student moves into that dorm, there is one conversation most families skip entirely. And it is one of the most important ones you can have!
I recently joined three incredible colleagues, a college professor, a medical doctor, and a learning disabilities specialist, to share 12 tips for preparing your college-bound student for everything ahead. Here are some of my tips:
π Set a communication plan before they leave.
Not after the tearful goodbye in the parking lot. Before. Decide together when you will talk, how often, and through what. A simple plan removes the guesswork and keeps both of you from feeling disconnected in those first uncertain weeks.
π Know the difference between homesickness and something more.
Homesickness is normal. But if your student is sleeping too much or too little, withdrawing from everything, or struggling to function day to day, that is worth paying attention to. Trust your instincts as a parent. You know your child.
πLearn what resources are available on campus before there is a crisis.
Academic support, student health, counseling services. Know where they are and make sure your student knows too. Having that information before they need it makes all the difference when a hard moment arrives.
This conversation is one of the most practical things you can watch before move-in day. πΊ Hit the link in bio to check out the full conversation.
