Today is World Mental Health Day โ and this one is personal. ๐
As a physician, I spend my days caring for people's physical health. But today I want to talk about something we do not discuss nearly enough: mental health. And the fact that it can affect anyone โ your child, your teenager, your parent, your neighbor, your grandparent, you.
Some things to watch for in the people you love: โ Changes in eating โ too little or too much โ Sleeping too little or too much โ Unexplained weight changes โ Mood swings, increased anger, or pulling away from people โ Just seemingโฆ different
If you notice these things, reach out. You do not have to fix anything. Sometimes just saying "I see you, and I'm here" is the most important thing you can do.
If you ever think someone is in crisis, please call or text 988 โ the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline. Do not wait.
Here is what I do for my own mental health, and yes, I have to be intentional about it: I dream. I plan. I think about where I want to take my family next, I sketch out the trip, I research the details. The act of building something to look forward to genuinely restores me. I am a planner and a creative at heart, and protecting that time is something I take seriously.
What do you do to take care of YOU? Share it below โ I really want to know. ๐
The suggestions in this post are for general awareness only and are not a substitute for evaluation or treatment by your own physician or mental provider.
