The next time that familiar argument starts, ask yourself: “What’s my usual move here, and where does it get us?”
You can practice a different response before your partner does. It won’t guarantee they’ll meet you there, but it gives you both a chance to do something other than repeat the same old fight.

How many of these feel like a language you were never taught?

Most of us grew up learning how to defend ourselves, hide our feelings, or pretend nothing was wrong. We had far fewer examples of how to regulate ourselves, own our part, or stay connected when we’re hurt.

Most of us spend our whole lives chasing the wrong kind of pleasure.

Our culture trains us to pursue the gratification of achievements and admiration. But it will never fill the deeper hunger inside of us for something more.

The wisdom of relational joy is what we and the world desperately need.

The nourishing, lasting fulfillment that comes simply from being present and deeply connected to the people we love.

What kind of pleasure are you building your life around?

You don’t have to be hard on yourself to become a better person, and you don’t have to be hard on your partner to ask for something to change.

Be clear, be firm, and remember that kindness belongs in the difficult conversations, too.

You can take responsibility without tearing yourself apart, and you can stand up for yourself without tearing someone else down.

Living a contempt-free life is a gift to yourself and everyone you love.
