"My dog ate chocolate" isn't one question. It's three.

What kind? Baking chocolate and dark are the dangerous ones. Milk chocolate is far less concentrated. White chocolate is basically not a chocolate problem.

How much? A Lab eating one fun size milk chocolate bar is a very different call than a Chihuahua eating a dark chocolate bar.

How big is your dog? Dose is everything. Weight changes the answer completely.

Have those three answers ready and call us, don't guess from a search result, and don't try to induce vomiting at home.

Khora’s family knew something wasn’t quite right.
For about two weeks, she seemed a little “off.” She wasn’t jumping onto things like she normally would, and the fur around her hips was not as well groomed. She was still eating, drinking, and using the litter box normally, so there wasn’t just one obvious sign pointing to an emergency. Then things suddenly changed.

Her owner heard loud noises and found Khora “flipping and flopping,” with her front legs paddling and her eyes dilated. Later, another thud was heard, and Khora was found lying near a lamp, trembling around her ears and licking her lips.

Khora was brought in for evaluation, where the diagnostics led to a very rare diagnosis of polycythemia.

Khora’s story is an important reminder to pay attention to the little changes. Sometimes “she just isn’t acting like herself” is the first indication that something bigger is happening.

Khora is now at home with her family, and we cannot wait for the future updates on how she is doing! You know your pet’s normal. When something suddenly changes, or your pet develops abnormal neurologic signs, don’t wait. Seek veterinary care.

If your pet is wearing a costume this year, three things to check before Halloween night, not on Halloween night.

Can they move normally? Full range on all four legs, no hobbling.

Can they pant? Nothing across the chest or around the neck that restricts breathing. Panting is how dogs cool down.

What can come off and get eaten? Beads, buttons, felt pieces, elastic, googly eyes. Test it at home for ten minutes first.
If they freeze, drop, or won't walk, that's a no. Some dogs just aren't costume dogs, and a bandana counts as a costume!

It's getting cooler, mice are coming inside, and bait boxes are going down all over Arlington.

Here's what most people don't realize: your pet doesn't have to eat the bait directly. Eating a poisoned mouse can do it too. And some products don't show symptoms for three to five days, by which point internal bleeding has already started.

If you think they got into any: bring the box or packaging with you. The active ingredient determines the entire treatment, and there are several very different kinds.

Don't wait for symptoms. This is one where "he seems fine" means nothing.

Global Cat Day, so here's the thing we'd most like cat owners to know:
String is not a toy.

Ribbon, yarn, dental floss, hair ties, tinsel, the drawstring from a hoodie, anything long and thin. When a cat swallows it, one end can catch while the intestine keeps trying to move the rest along. It's called a linear foreign body, and it's one of the fastest ways a cat ends up in emergency surgery.

Never pull a string you see hanging from either end. Come in instead.
Hair ties are the one we see most, and nobody thinks of them as a hazard.

Everyone's dog is suddenly back outside, and our exam rooms reflect it.

Cooler weather means the dog parks are packed again, and the most common thing we treat after a park visit isn't a dramatic fight, it's a puncture wound somebody didn't notice.

Bite wounds seal over on the surface and get infected underneath. By day three it's a hot, swollen abscess that needs to be opened and drained.

If there was any contact at all, run your hands over him that night. Small punctures, wet fur, flinching in one spot.
Come in the same day if you find one. Open until 10PM.

Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day, and we want to talk about it the useful way.
Not appearance. Mobility.

Extra weight is the single biggest accelerator of joint pain in dogs and cats. It's also the one risk factor you can actually change and the difference shows up faster than people expect. Pets who lose even a modest amount often move better within weeks.

Quick home check: run your hands along their sides. You should feel ribs under a thin layer, without pressing hard. Look down at him from above, there should be a waist.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and we have a small ask.

If you're bringing one home this month: schedule a vet visit in the first two weeks, even if they seem perfectly fine.

Shelter dogs come with unknown histories, and the things worth catching early, parasites, a heart murmur, an old injury that healed wrong, dental disease, usually aren't obvious in week one.

And if something does come up before you can get established with a primary vet, that's exactly what we're here for.

Pain isn’t always obvious. Instead of limping or crying, you may start to notice your pet:

- Slowing down on stairs or hesitating before a jump
- Sleeping in a new spot
- Snapping when touched in one specific place
- Licking one area obsessively
- Eating slower, or dropping food

"He's just getting old" is sometimes true. It's also the most common thing people say about pain that's treatable.

If something's changed, it's worth a look. Open until 10PM daily.

State Fair season, fall festivals, food trucks everywhere.

If he's coming with you, know this: corn dog sticks, funnel cake grease, turkey leg bones, and dropped kettle corn are all things we've pulled out of dogs or treated the aftermath of.

Rich, greasy food is the number one cause of pancreatitis we see this time of year, and it's genuinely miserable for them.

Bring his own treats. Let him have a great day. Just not that day.
