Swollen muzzle. Puffy eyes. Hives across the belly. Usually a bee, a wasp, or an ant hill he didn't see.

Most reactions are mild and treatable. Some aren't. Come in now if you see:
- Swelling around the face, mouth, or throat
- Trouble breathing or noisy breathing
- Vomiting alongside the swelling
- Collapse or extreme weakness

Facial swelling can go from cosmetic to serious in under an hour. If it's growing, don't watch it, bring them in.

We are open 10a to 10p. If it's after hours or they’re struggling to breathe, go straight to a 24 hour ER (Veterinary Emergency Hospital Midlothian is always a great option).

The kids go back to school and suddenly the house is quiet, the routine is different, and there's a backpack on the floor.

Two things worth knowing this week:
What's in the bag.
Sugar free gum, granola bars with raisins, chocolate, loose medication. Xylitol and grapes are genuinely dangerous, not just "an upset stomach."

What's in the house.

Dogs who were surrounded by people all summer are now alone by 8AM. Pacing, accidents, destructive chewing, and refusing food are all worth taking seriously.

Backpacks go on hooks. And if something got eaten, call us, don't wait to see what happens.

Here's the test: press the back of your hand flat to the pavement and hold it for seven seconds. If you can't, neither can they.

Paw pads burn faster than most people expect, and the damage doesn't always show up until hours later, limping, licking, dark or peeling pads.

Walk before 9AM or after sunset. Stick to grass. And if you see blistering or she won't put weight on it, come see us.

It started as a small itchy patch this morning. By tonight it's a raw, oozing spot the size of a coaster.
Hot spots move fast. Heat, humidity, and a dog who won't stop licking is all it takes and once the skin breaks down, it gets infected quickly.

Don't wait it out. Don't cover it. Don't put human ointment on it. It needs to be cleaned, treated, and protected before she chews it worse.
We can handle it same day!

August in North Texas is predictable. Here's what actually walks through our doors this month:

1. Heat exhaustion - panting that won't settle, wobbly walking
2. omiting and diarrhea - usually something they ate outside
3. Hot spots and ear infections - humidity plus swimming
4. Cuts and torn nails - pool decks and hot concrete
5. Stings and allergic reactions - sudden facial swelling or hives

None of these need to become a middle of the night crisis if they get handled early. That's the whole point of us.

Although International Cat Day Is behind us (on the 8th), we'd still love to celebrate and show honor to the animals who will absolutely not tell you when something is wrong.
Cats are wired to hide illness. By the time it's obvious, it's usually been going on a while.

Things worth paying attention to:
-Hiding more than usual Skipping meals for over 24 hours
-Straining in the litter box (this one is urgent, always) Breathing with an open mouth
-Sudden hard to explain grumpiness
You know your cat's normal better than anyone. Trust it.

🎾 Quirk: If you throw it, Mishka will fetch it… and if you don’t throw it, she’ll probably remind you until you do! She never gets tired of playing fetch. 😂

Let's meet the team! 🤩

Meet our Medical Director, Dr. Daniels!
Dr. Cody Daniels was born in East Texas, where he grew up on a ranch with cows, horses, dogs, cats, and many other animals. He developed a love of caring for animals at a young age, and by primary school, he knew he wanted to be a veterinarian when he grew up. He was able to complete his undergrad and vet school education at the school of his dreams, Texas A&M University. After receiving his veterinary degree, Dr. Daniels was excited to secure a position at a Veterinary ER and referral center in East Dallas. It was there he realized his passion for emergency and critical care.
Dr. Daniels’s professional interests and advanced training include soft tissue surgery, ultrasound, endoscopy, and critical care. He particularly enjoys training and mentoring veterinarians who want to pursue a career in or strengthen their skills in emergency medicine. Dr. Daniels has owned German Shepherds over his entire life. He has also fostered cats and dogs while recovering from various ailments until they found a forever home. Currently, he owns two German Shepherd Dogs, Alexander and Mishka. Both of whom were rescued due to life-threatening illnesses.
When Dr. Daniels is not working at the hospital or treating pets, he enjoys traveling, smoking BBQ, and any activity on the water. He also enjoys watching Dallas Cowboys or Texas A&M football. Dr. Daniels hopes to continue expanding the reach and capabilities of VEHM and VEHA while pursuing the highest standards of care for patients and clients. He strives to provide a positive work culture and promote the importance management plays in compassion fatigue in the veterinary community.
