The work our 26-member Dew Crew accomplished this summer was truly spectacular! 🌟 The numbers really tell the story:

40,000 lbs of dirt and rock excavated
340 bags of mulch distributed
50,000 lbs of green waste collected through weeding and pruning
It was a lot of hard work—but we had a lot of fun along the way.

Want to be part of the Dew Crew next year? Come meet us at the Arlington Teen Summer Job Fair in early spring.

Meet Nicki Viar!

Nicki is often the first person families connect with at Columbia Gardens. She answers the phone, welcomes visitors, helps families locate loved ones' graves, and supports our office with a variety of administrative tasks.

Originally from Bolivia, Nicki has lived in the Arlington area since she was nine years old and is fluent in Spanish. Before joining Columbia Gardens in 2025, she already had a personal connection to the cemetery, where several of her family members are buried. She has always found Columbia Gardens to be a peaceful place to visit, saying, "I like being here. It feels like I'm still with my loved ones."

Nicki's favorite part of her job is helping families find the information and support they need during a difficult time. We're grateful for the kindness, professionalism, and care she brings to our office team every day.

At just 14 years old, Jaxon Lamothe is making a lasting impact by honoring the veterans buried at Columbia Gardens Cemetery. For his Eagle Scout project, Jaxon is documenting our veterans' graves for inclusion in the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM). VLM is a national online database that recognizes those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces with dedicated memorial pages.

With the support of his family, fellow Scouts from Troop 164 and other local troops, and military-affiliated volunteers, Jaxon has already identified over 800 veterans buried in the cemetery. Using an app on their phones with a camera that records GPS coordinates, his team photographs each headstone and documents details such as the veteran's name, birth/death dates, military rank, branch of service, campaigns, and gravesite location, along with any other significant information they can obtain. This information is submitted to the VLM to preserve these veterans’ legacies.

When the project is complete, Jaxon will become just the third person in the world to complete a Veterans Legacy Memorial mapping project.

For Jaxon, whose family has strong military ties, the project is especially meaningful. "I feel that I'm making a difference by spreading awareness about the VLM and helping veterans be remembered for their service," he says.

Thank you, Jaxon, for your dedication to preserving history and ensuring our veterans are never forgotten.

On May 30, a graveside dedication ceremony was held at Columbia Gardens to honor Captain John F. Hasey (1916-2005), who served with the French Foreign Legion. In 1942, General Charles de Gaulle awarded Hasey the Compagnon de la Libération, the highest distinction the Free French could bestow. He was the first American citizen to receive this honor. During the ceremony, Hasey’s remarkable life and service to France were recounted by Thierry Chaunu, President, American Society of Le Souvenir Français; Col. Thibaud Thomas, French Army Military Attaché; and Col. Thomas Labouche, French Liaison Office, US Army HQ. An unveiling of a bronze Medallion of the Companion of the Liberation inset into Hasey’s tombstone was followed by a wreath-laying and reception at our 3411 Venue.

Meet Grace Indorf! In her role as Family Advisor, she helps families select a final resting place for their loved one and assists with designing custom monuments and markers. She is skilled at event planning services -- whether at the graveside or in our Event Center for a chapel service or reception -- and coordinates with officiants, florists and caterers.

“It’s gratifying to comfort families and walk them through the steps to honor their loved one’s passing,” Grace says. “I enjoy meeting with people face to face to gain a good understanding of their needs.”

Before joining the Columbia Gardens office team in 2022, Grace worked with the American Battle Monuments Commission, an experience she finds helpful when dealing with the families of military veterans. “I always ask if their loved one served in the military and explain that they are eligible for military honors and a marker at Columbia Gardens,” she says. “If they need documentation of military service, I can assist.” Recently, Grace helped located the records for a 108-year-old veteran through the National Archives.

On a personal note, Grace played the piccolo and cymbals in the Washington Commanders Band for 10 years – before stepping away last year after the birth of her son.

Columbia Gardens appreciates the dedication and kindness Grace brings to the families we serve.

🌸 Huge thanks to everyone who joined us for our Annual Spring Fling! 🌸 Doug Barroga, Head Gardener, was on hand to welcome two new members of the Dew Crew, our summer groundskeeping crew of high school and college students. Nine years ago, Columbia Gardens launched the Dew Crew to help teens gain practical job experience in our community — and the program continues to thrive. Many crew members return, summer after summer, building skills, friendships, and pride in their work along the way. This year, the Dew Crew will be more than 25 members strong!
