Waltonwood resident, Bob, went on an adventure of a lifetime to the Dulles Air Traffic Control Tower. Due to the ATC facilities being strictly off limits to the public, Bob was very surprised when the impossible became a reality.

After going through two layers of security, the Dulles ATC team welcomed Bob and his guests like VIPs; granting full access to their operations.

Everyone was es**rted to the conference room where Staff Support Specialist, Jeremy Smith, (our es**rt during the entire visit) gave us a detailed overview of air traffic control. The presentation was eye opening and filled with many questions.

After the presentation, Bob was brought to the simulator room where he put on a headset to practice timing takeoffs with incoming flights. The maneuvers required multi-tasking and a great deal of patience and care. After juggling the fast-paced coordination, Bob joked that he definitely wasn’t cut out to be a controller.

The main event was ascending the 325 foot tower. From there Bob could see a beautiful panoramic view of the entire airport including all four runways. He was even able to see the Washington Commander’s practice facility.

The day wrapped up with lunch back in the conference room and filled with more questions and shared stories. Sue Redburn (from the Washington Center) and Jeremy Horton (Dulles Airport Operations Manager) even joined us.

Before leaving ATC, Bob was presented with a gift bag featuring an honorary Washington Dulles ATC Tower Specialist certificate an NATCA badge, ground control training manual and a soon to be obsolete physical flight progress strip. The gifts were a total surprise and delight.

Bob was blown away by his adventure and gained a deep appreciation for the dedicated teams that keep our skies safe. Bob commented, “We may take them for granted, but I assure you they do not take us for granted.” The adventure was fabulous and far exceeded Bob’s expectations.

⚾️ More Than a Baseball Game ❤️

At Waltonwood, our Adventures are all about creating meaningful experiences for our residents—whether it’s revisiting something they once loved, trying something they’ve always wanted to do, or checking an item off their bucket list.

For one of our residents, that Adventure meant heading to a Washington Nationals game with his son. But this wasn’t just a day at the ballpark. It was a chance to reconnect with something that has brought them together for years.

His son, Michael O'Brien, shared that baseball and sporting events have always been a special way for the two of them to connect. Some of his favorite memories are simply playing catch with his dad at home:

“The ball going back and forth, no words needed to be spoken, just the popping of the glove…” ❤️

Sometimes the most meaningful moments don’t require many words. They’re found in the traditions we share, the memories we carry with us, and the opportunity to experience them together once again.

We’re so grateful we could help make this Adventure happen—and give a father and son another day at the ballpark together. ⚾️🏟️❤️

We traveled WAY back in time for this year’s Dino-themed Camp Waltonwood, and our campers had a ROAR-some adventure! 🦖

From experimenting in our Mad Science Lab 🧪 and exploring the Dino Museum, to meeting a larger-than-life inflatable dinosaur, there was something prehistoric around every corner!

Our campers also:
🌿 Created their own mini prehistoric worlds with live plants
🦴 Made their own dinosaur fossil pictures
🦕 Played Pin the Tail on the Dino
📸 And finished their adventure with a trip to our very own “prehistoric waterfall” for the perfect photo!

But the best part? Watching our residents, families, and little campers experience it all together 💚

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make Camp Waltonwood a dino-mite day to remember!

What would YOUR little paleontologist have loved most—the science lab, Dino Museum, or creating their own prehistoric world? 🦖👇

What a wonderful way to wrap up our Clear the Shelters campaign! ❤️

A few of our Waltonwood residents took a special trip to Loudoun County Animal Services to deliver our final round of donations collected by our residents, families, friends, and associates. While there, we were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility, including a look inside their surgery room!

We have loved learning more about the incredible work LCAS does for the animals in our community and finding ways for our residents to be part of the mission.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated, shared our posts, participated in our events, and helped us support our furry friends throughout this campaign. We are so grateful for the generosity of our Waltonwood community! 🐾❤️

And an extra special thank you to Loudoun County Animal Services for welcoming our residents and giving us such a memorable tour!

The residents loved creating a raise and release butterfly garden. The process took about 3 weeks. Tiny caterpillars arrived a few weeks ago. These tiny insects were carefully placed in a netted garden. The residents watched as the larva ate a special made nutrient-rich brown paste and grew bigger. Now pupa, they spun silk casings and crawled inside their chrysalises. A couple of weeks later, we had 4 beautiful Painted Lady butterflies who hungrily ate their sugar water. A couple of days later, they were released into the courtyard garden. The experience was not only fun and educational, but the residents did their part as conservationists. Only 1-3% of eggs survive in the wild. Bringing the caterpillars inside a protective netting and making sure they had everything they needed increased their survival rate by 90%. This act of kindness not only protects the caterpillars from predators by keeping them safe but also helps restore local populations and add to the pollinator count.

🐾 Baking with a Purpose! 🦴❤️

The kitchen was filled with smiles as our Memory Care residents rolled up their sleeves to make homemade dog treats for our friends at Loudoun County Animal Services! 🐶

For many of our residents, baking brought back cherished memories of preparing homemade treats and meals for their families. It was a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with lifelong skills while creating something special for animals in need.

Meanwhile, our Independent Living residents put their creativity to work by making handmade dog toys to donate alongside the treats. 🧸🐕

These simple acts of kindness remind us that giving back has no age limit, and every generation has something meaningful to share.

We can’t wait to deliver these donations to LCAS as part of our Clear the Shelters campaign! 💙

Our Memory Care residents enjoyed a refreshing afternoon in the courtyard under the comfort of our portico, cooling off with delicious flavored snow cones and a colorful rainbow sprinkler!🌈💦 It was the perfect way to stay active, enjoy the sunshine, and create joyful moments together. Even our amazing care team joined in the fun!

At Waltonwood, we believe it’s the little moments of laughter and connection that make the biggest memories. ❤️

🐾 Meet Our Resident & Her Best Friend, JJ! 🐾

There’s something truly special about the bond between a person and their pet—and Joey "JJ" is no exception. ❤️

JJ, a 10-year-old Havanese, is described as loving, friendly, and the very best companion. Whether he’s tilting his head as if he’s listening to every word, snuggling at bedtime, or happily following his mom wherever she goes, JJ fills each day with unconditional love.

For his owner, JJ is so much more than a pet. He has brought comfort, companionship, and joy, helping ease the loneliness after the loss of her family members. Together they enjoy walks around our courtyard, cozy mornings, and simply spending time side by side.

At Waltonwood Ashburn, we know pets play an important role in healthy aging. They encourage daily activity, reduce feelings of loneliness, provide routine and purpose, and offer the unconditional love that can brighten every day.

Thank you, JJ, for reminding us that sometimes the smallest paws leave the biggest footprints on our hearts. 🐶❤️
