New Grade, New Posture: Is your student ready for school?

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR!!!

As you wrap up summer vacations and start crossing items off your back-to-school shopping lists, there is one essential health check that often gets overlooked: your child’s posture.

Heavy backpacks, hours of slouching over screens, and cramped school desks can take a serious toll on a growing spine.

Poor posture doesn't just cause aches—it can lead to fatigue, poor concentration, and long-term spinal misalignment.

To help your student head back to the classroom with confidence and a healthy spine, we are running a special in-house promotion all through August:

The "New Grade, New Posture" Student Screening

For the entire month of August, we are offering an introductory Student Posture & Spinal Screening for just $79.

This comprehensive, kid-friendly assessment includes:

-Digital Posture Analysis to catch imbalances early.
-Spinal Alignment Check to ensure healthy growth and joint mobility.
-Backpack Safety -Check (bring their school backpack in so we can check the fit and weight!).
-Simple Home Exercises to combat "tech neck."

Appointments for this special screening are limited and fill up quickly before the first day of school.

To secure a spot for your child, teenager, or college student, please give us a call at 703-723-4178.

Let’s make sure they start the new school year standing tall and feeling their best!

Yes, weather changes can affect arthritic pain. Many people with arthritis experience joint pain that worsens when the weather gets colder and damper, especially in the winter.

This is because when you have arthritis and experience pain due to weather changes, chiropractic care can offer benefits by helping to relieve joint pain, improve range of motion, reduce muscle tension around the joints, and potentially lessen the impact of pressure changes in the atmosphere on your body by maintaining proper spinal alignment.

Key points about chiropractic care for weather-related arthritis pain:

Joint manipulation:
Chiropractors use gentle adjustments to realign joints, which can alleviate stiffness and pain associated with arthritis flare-ups caused by weather changes.

Muscle tension relief:
By addressing muscle imbalances around joints, chiropractic care can help reduce muscle spasms and associated pain, improving overall joint function.

Improved circulation:
Proper spinal alignment can enhance blood flow to affected areas, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.

Pain management without medication:
Chiropractic care offers a non-invasive approach to pain management, which can be especially beneficial for individuals who want to avoid relying on medication.

Lifestyle guidance:
Chiropractors may provide advice on exercises, stretches, and ergonomic practices to further support joint health and manage pain related to weather changes.

How weather changes affect arthritis pain:

1)Barometric pressure:
Many people with arthritis report increased joint pain when barometric pressure drops, which can occur with approaching storms.
2)Temperature fluctuations:
Cold weather can cause muscles and tissues to contract, leading to increased joint stiffness and pain
3)Synovial fluid
In cooler weather, the fluid in your joints that acts like motor oil thickens, making it harder for your joints to function.
4)Inflammation
Colder, damper weather can cause inflammation in the joints, which can lead to pain, stiffness, and swelling.

The Benefits of Assisted Stretching and Chiropractic Care:
Stretching is one of the popular elements in physiotherapy and rehabilitation. When correctly guided, it can help minimize or slow down the disabling effects of chronic health conditions.
Stretching is a powerful tool that can enhance the benefits of your chiropractic adjustments.

Incorporating a guided stretching routine into your wellness regimen can help prepare your body for adjustments, promote flexibility, and prolong the positive effects of your chiropractic care. Increased muscle length from regular stretching helps in maintaining proper posture. Range of Motion: Improved range of motion in the joints, especially in the spine, hips, and shoulders, facilitates better posture. It enables the body to align correctly without undue strain on any muscle group.

The combined approach of chiropractic care, coupled with assisted stretching, creates a balance between the skeletal and muscular systems. Chiropractic adjustments can enhance the effectiveness of assisted stretching by ensuring that the spine is properly aligned. The joints move better through their full range of motion, allowing for more fluidity and movement of the body as a whole. The increased flexibility gained through assisted stretching will assist in the overall success of chiropractic adjustments by allowing for more range of motion, promoting longer-lasting relief and improved well-being.

Increases Flexibility - Increased flexibility with assisted stretching can improve your overall flexibility and in turn, your body's range of motion. Being flexible is a key aspect of your physical health. There are many benefits to improving flexibility, including improved posture, reduced joint pain/strain, injury risk, and stress, as well as augmented overall function. Assisted stretching can help you achieve those benefits by improving muscle length and loosening connective tissue in a safe, effective manner.

Assists with Stress Management - When we become stressed, we often carry it in our muscles. This increased tension within the muscle tissue can contract muscle length and produce pain. When stretching, the body releases the mood-boosting neurotransmitter, serotonin, which helps encourage your muscles to relax, and as a result, reduces stress levels. Assisted stretching activates the parasympathetic nervous system which will reduce the intensity of pain while also reducing acute inflammation. Assisted stretching also enables patients to unwind and let their stretch therapist do all the work!

Promotes and Enhances Athletic Performance and Mobility - By improving flexibility, range of motion, and muscle balance, it enhances agility and reduces the risk of injuries, helping athletes perform at their peak, allowing for more efficient movement patterns.

Improves Posture and Reduces Muscle Tension - Tight muscles can cause your body to move out of its intended alignment. Assisted stretching targets muscle tightness by releasing tension in the muscle through safe stretching maneuvers.

Facilitates Better Circulation - Consistent stretching, done the right way, can improve circulation. This in turn gets oxygen and nutrients to the soft tissues of the body reducing recovery and healing times.
Increases Range of Motion - If you’ve had surgery or an injury, you may be looking to regain the range of motion you had in the affected joint. You’ll notice your joints will become more fluid and assisted stretching can stimulate production of your body’s natural lubricants for easier movement.

Assists with Injury Prevention – By increasing your flexibility, you contribute to reducing the risk of injuries during physical activities. By targeting specific muscle groups, assisted stretching can address muscle imbalances and tightness that may lead to injuries. This will lead to the minimization of muscle stiffness that becomes increasingly vital for aging adults, as it helps enhance mobility, reduce discomfort, and support independent and active lifestyles.

Reduces Stiffness and Inflammation - When your muscles are tight from lack of movement, they can cause discomfort as they are shortened and contracted. This, in turn, limits your range of motion. When stretching your muscles, it returns them to their natural length and releases tension making you feel more relaxed.

Assist in Muscle Recovery (after a workout/cardio) – The direct correlation between stretching and enhanced sports performance is well-documented. Stretching can help individuals overcome physical limitations that may hinder their sports performance. Each sport and physical activity have unique demands on the body, requiring specific muscle groups to be strong, flexible, and resilient. By targeting muscle groups that are commonly engaged in a particular sport, individuals can prevent injuries, improve performance, and maximize their potential in their chosen activity.

Assisted stretching leads to improved muscle coordination, increased power output, and quicker recovery times after intense physical activities. Whether it's sprinting faster, jumping higher, or maintaining balance and stability, the benefits of stretching extend beyond flexibility to directly impact an individual's performance level in their sport.

The Importance of Stretching the Elderly - As we age our muscles and joints weaken and range of movement declines. This makes it challenging to maintain mobility. When Osteoarthritis affects the facet joints (between two vertebrae), the resulting pain can be felt in the lower back or neck regions. Although it may be painful and difficult to move these joints, regular stretching can benefit older adults as a way to improve muscle elasticity, and range of motion.

If you were involved in an auto accident and suffered injuries, we can help you.

Chiropractic treatment can help alleviate pain and inflammation and can even help you recover faster. These effective, gentle, safe, and natural treatments focus on helping the body to heal itself. Scar tissue can develop on the muscles inside the body after a car accident injury occurs. This tissue will cause the victim to feel uncomfortable and stiff. Dr. Poe, with appropriate treatment, can specifically target the damaged areas, breaking up the scar tissue faster than just letting it heal on its own.

The most common injury sustained in a Motor Vehicle Accident is Whiplash. When an accident occurs, and causes whiplash, this action stretches the tendons, ligaments, and muscles around the sensitive neck area, and you'll experience the symptoms of whiplash. Whiplash symptoms can vary from none to severe, and might show up right after the injury or after several hours or days.

These are the most common symptoms of whiplash:
• Neck pain
• Headaches
• Blurry Vision
• Neck stiffness
• Shoulder pain
• Tinnitus, ringing in the ear
• Dizziness
• Pain in your arm or hand
• Numbness in your arm or hand
• Irritability
• Sleeplessness
• Tiredness
• Trouble turning your head

Chiropractic care is a particularly effective treatment for whiplash because it is able to reduce inflammation surrounding the affected muscles and ligaments. Additionally, it restores neck and shoulder mobility.

A Chiropractor is the most common health care provider sought following a motor vehicle collision. Chiropractic Care is the most logical choice of expert and case manager in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and Whiplash after a motor vehicle collision.

Dr. Poe is highly trained and skilled in the management, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of Motor Vehicle injuries due to knowledge of biomechanics and injury mechanisms.

Rear end collisions cause greater injuries to the body. From this type of accident there are 3 million new whiplash injuries each year. Chiropractors can diagnose and treat motor vehicle injuries better than any other health care provider.

After a collision it is mostly the spinal structures that are injured such as:
● Disc : are the shock-absorbing cushions between each vertebra of the spine
● Ligament : connective tissue that connects bone to bone
● Facet Joints : Allow your spine flexibility to move and twist
● Muscles, are however where we often feel the aches and pain

Dr. Leonard Poe, DC is a Chiropractor and Applied Kinesiologist serving Broadlands, VA and surrounding areas. In practice, Dr. Poe combines the fields of Chiropractic, Applied Kinesiology, Nutrition, Acupuncture and Rehabilitative Medicine.

Core Concepts Chiropractic is primarily concerned with structural, chemical and emotional imbalance in the diagnosis of health problems. If one of these factors becomes deficient or overburdened, poor dysfunctional health is the result, especially when involved in a traumatic motor vehicle accident.

Treatments are developed and implemented based on this principle. Our goal is to help people achieve good health and raise their health potential naturally, without the use of medicine or surgery.

If you’re in need of care due to an Automobile Accident, please give us a call today as we would love to get you happy, healthy and back to your normal everyday life!

Whether you are an athlete, a runner, a kid, or just getting a little bit older, knee pain is something that can easily start to creep in. The knees are one of those joints in the body prone to taking wear over time. It’s important not to overlook early intervention.

Knee problems can range from simple inflammatory problems to more serious degenerative problems. Tendonitis, bursitis, strain/sprains and swelling are usually symptoms of poor knee mechanics. Correcting these problems early will help avoid degenerative problems and meniscal tears. If you’re not sure what to do, I can help.
