Expedition Recovery We offer rewarding experiences, to our recovery community, that promote individual growth through educational outdoor activities. Nature heals.

We create an environment that encourages presence and vulnerability. We recover together. We empower our clients to build a life and recovery plan that matches their own goals. We educate clients with skills that transfer from the outdoors to the day-to-day. We create the atmosphere that encourages that through engaging outdoor activities that are conducted in an emotionally and physically safe manner. We achieve outcomes by showing up with authenticity, keeping our focus on the client first, understanding the client’s needs and tailoring experiences that present the appropriate level of risk to promote growth. We do this by teaching skills that transfer from the outer world to the inner world. We reduce risk to the lowest possible level while still offering valuable experiences. Experiential learning promotes integration of the knowledge and skills gained. We strongly believe there are multiple pathways to recovery. We offer a program of empowerment through the development of outdoor skills, individual goal setting, mentoring and connection with nature. Our Values:
1. Play – necessary to development of skills at every stage of life, required for emotional regulation.
2. Passion – the source of purpose, commitment and inspiration that drives us to be our best.
3. Presence – the way in which we show up for ourselves and our community; emotionally available, authentic and vulnerable.
4. Local Community - Strong community supports individual well-being and individual well-being strengthens community.
5. Recovery First - Supporting people, suffering with the disease of addition, is an integral part of why we do what we do.
6. The Natural World - Conservation of the natural world is key to protecting the enjoyment and learning of all individuals, communities and future generations

We are, first and foremost, peers in recovery. We have the shared experience in recovery the gives us firsthand knowledge to relate directly to our clients. We are members of the community. We are recovery professionals and outdoor educators. Our clients are individuals in recovery or trying to clarify their own relationship with recovery. They have begun a journey either through working with a therapist or through formal treatment. Our clients are seeking to strengthen their recovery, find their own path or build life goals.

Safety is medicine all on its own.

One of the core values of my business is safety. It’s also critical to any sort of healing; whether it’s physical, mental or emotional.

Over the last three days, I completed my Wilderness First Responder re-certification training. This training is not only required by the National Forest before taking clients into the backcountry but it is also an industry best practice.

Having these skills also ensures the emotional safety of not only my clients, but also for me. Knowing that I can rise to the occasion if (when) crises strikes means I can breathe just a little easier. And that means we’re can all be just a touch more present with one another.

When safety is first, healing arises naturally.

After years in addiction and trauma recovery, I still felt frequent anxiety and other strong emotions. Still uncomfortable in my skin and left with a sense of uncertainty, I struggled to let others see beyond my mask.

Despite all the work, I didn’t feel safe to let others in.

I had “done the work” and my life improved but I had not experienced what it was like to feel truly safe, seen, trusting and nurtured.

So I kept looking for the next book or podcast that held the answer. It didn’t come.

Because the answer isn’t more self-improvement rather a lived experience of safety, connection, and authenticity.

Because lasting change doesn’t begin when you understand yourself better. It begins when you experience yourself differently.

Because when we experience safety, connection, and belonging, the capacities we’ve been searching for don’t have to be created.

They begin to emerge.

Please join me on October 17th from 10:00AM to 4:00PM for Moving Beyond Survival, a day long retreat for survivors of complex trauma, generational trauma and family dysfunction.

I used to think if I just understood my trauma well enough, I’d eventually heal from it.

I read the books. I could explain my patterns to anyone who asked. I still didn’t feel safe.

It took me a long time to realize insight was never going to be enough — my nervous system needed to feel safe before any of that understanding could actually change anything.

That’s the whole idea behind this retreat. Not more information. A felt experience of safety, in community, in the woods — so your body can finally start to believe what your mind already knows.

Growing up in chaos changes how your body moves through the world — even years later, even when you’re safe now.

If you find yourself still replaying conversations, still one step ahead of the next problem, still carrying responsibilities that were never yours to carry — you’re not broken. Your nervous system just hasn’t gotten the memo that the danger is over.

I’m hosting a daylong retreat near Asheville, NC for adults working to move beyond survival mode and reconnect with themselves: guided mindfulness, somatic practices, therapeutic drumming, and time in Pisgah National Forest — all designed to help your nervous system experience safety, not just understand it intellectually.

Space is intentionally limited to 12 people.

Your needs aren’t the problem. Your strategies are.

Too many people who’ve experienced trauma have been taught they’re selfish for trying to get their needs met.

I don’t believe that’s true.

The need for love, safety, support, and connection isn’t selfish. Those are deeply human needs.

The question isn’t whether you’re trying to meet your needs.

The question is how.

Recovery isn’t about convincing yourself you shouldn’t have needs. It’s about learning healthier ways to meet them.

What need is your current strategy trying to fill?

Listen up!

I’ve been censoring myself to make other people feel comfortable. But that’s not my job. We’re all need to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. That includes both me and you.

Sometimes you have to stop and smell the mushrooms.

In a culture that seeks to keep us checked, it’s ok to find natural ways to reconnect with yourself.

Just recorded a brief, simple video about my recent struggles with giving up caffeine.

I realized I wanted to talk about it… and I also realized I’m afraid to talk about it. Because if I do, it means I have to be accountable.

I’m also worried about what happens if I don’t give up caffeine, which shows me there’s still a bit of reservation.

This reminds me a lot of my early recovery from alcohol.

I’m going to keep sharing about this journey. Maybe it will help me. Maybe it will help you, too.

If you’ve ever felt like everyone else got a recovery handbook and you didn’t, you’re not alone. Most of us spent years learning one way to navigate life.
Recovery is the process of learning another. It takes time.

You might even feel shame because you’ve had everything else figured out.

You’re not alone!

I thought recovery would be about learning how to stop drinking. What I didn’t expect was having to learn how to live. How to handle disappointment. How to make friends. How to relax. How to trust myself.

For a long time I felt like everyone else knew what they were doing and I was just winging it.

What I’ve learned is that feeling lost isn’t a sign you’re doing recovery wrong. It’s often a sign you’re growing.
