Strength training changes for women in midlife. It does not become less important, it becomes more important!

The estrogen dips in perimenopause and menopause, and this impacts more than your reproductive system. It impacts your muscles, tendons and bones. Strength training is one of the few things that pushes back directly against that. Lighter, more cautious workouts are not the answer. Heavier, progressive consistent strength work is.

We work with women navigating exactly this every week, and the shift they see when they start lifting with a real plan is significant!

If you have been told to just take it easier as you get older, or stop doing the activities you love, know that there’s a place for you at Outshine to support you on your journey.

The dumbbell clean is one of our favorite power moves and one we see at Burn Boot Camp fairly often.

I love Olympic lifts done with dumbbells or kettlebells because it makes them more accessible and less technical with a lot of great value.

Done right, it builds explosive strength, trains your body to move fast and safe, and translates directly to real-life power. Done wrong, it turns into an all-back or all-arm movement that can create issues if done in high volume.

Watch Dr. Sieara break down the correct form and show common mistakes!

This exercise is for my golfers and softball/baseball/tennis/pickleball players!

When we’re performing medicine ball power movements, the focus should be on your intention to move powerfully and quickly. If these are completed at 30% speed, then you won’t get nearly as much benefit out of them.

I love this rotational throw because it forces you to learn how to coordinate maximum power by using the ground, your hips and your core to generate force.

When done correctly, the back knee and hip should drive first and the arms coming through slightly after. This translates to hitting a softball, getting max distance off your drive on the tee box, or hitting a forehand in pickleball or tennis.

I recommend a lighter med ball, somewhere between 5 to 10 pounds, for most folks when they start this movement. We don’t want something so heavy that it slows you down.

I like to describe the back leg as your gas pedal and the front leg as your brake. You should feel balanced when you finish the throw.

Start 2 to 3 times a week with as little as two sets of five on each side. Throw into a sturdy wall or to a partner.
