Manuscript draft submitted! 😮‍💨😭😍

A full year of devotion, energy, and love went into version one. And next spring, we can hold Attachment Theory Made Simple in our hands and I am delighted to share it with you.

I also spent the morning with my six year old staking our giant tomato plants, picking cucumbers and peppers, and watching baby bears in our neighborhood and I just love love love this life I get to live, in all of its imperfect and tender glory. Grateful for every bit of it ❤️

This is a tough one to write. Early Thursday morning, my stepdad Dale passed away. He had an incurable cancer and did everything he could to stay here as long as possible. I’m so lucky that I got to have him in my life for as long as I did. He was a part of our family for more than 25 years—longer than my own dad was in my life.

When I was in high school, we always joked that my friends liked to come to our house because they wanted to hang out with him more than they wanted to hang out with me :) He was the most fun. He introduced me to so many things—the bag game (IYKYK), cruises, blackjack, power tools, and many more. He was right there with us when my dad died unexpectedly and through many other losses we experienced over the years. We had many wonderful family vacations together. Everyone loved traveling with Dale because he made each moment fun, even if it technically wasn’t supposed to be. We were always laughing.

He helped Dan and I when we bought our first house, dedicating weekends to scraping popcorn ceilings. He walked me down the aisle and we coordinated a special father/daughter dance for my wedding. When I was pregnant with Nico and we were on our Babymoon trip in the Southwest, Dale and my mom came to our house and painted the nursery for us. Dale installed crown moldings through the whole house as a surprise. It was an amazing gift for our family.

He was always there.

It’s really difficult to imagine life without him. My heart hurts for my mom—they celebrated their 25 year wedding anniversary while Dale was in the hospital in April. My heart hurts for my sweet boys, who got so little time with him. And selfishly, my heart hurts for me. I already miss him.

If you are able, please wrap our family in a big hug. And if you have any memories of Dale you want to share, I would love to hear them.

Happy Father’s Day to the best dad I’ve ever know. The most gentle, caring, playful father who shows our boys every day how to be a whole person, someone who is strong and dependable and also deeply feeling and responsive. Who wakes up at 2:45 am every day and still finds patience for the daily grind. We love you the most ❤️

My stepdad is in the hospital with complications from cancer, and we are holding him in our hearts and hoping he gets to come home soon ❤️

And of course, missing my dad, who has been gone for nearly 23 years now and wishing he could see the life I’ve built ❤️

Internal Family Systems, or parts work—a model I use every single day in my therapy and coaching practice—is one of my favorite things to talk about (especially when it comes to healing attachment wounds). This episode is a shout out to anyone who has felt like they’ve had to put parts of themselves away to be more accepted or loved.

I talk about how we learn to break ourselves into pieces early in life (or even in adult relationships) and how those parts become protectors, managers, and firefighters doing their best to keep us safe. The beautiful thing about IFS is that it invites us to get curious about these parts, develop a real relationship with them, and update them about who we are now as adults with so many more resources than we had back then.

I also share how parts work and attachment theory blend together so well, why safety is the treatment when it comes to healing trauma and attachment wounding, and how our patterns of survival can interrupt our patterns of attachment—with others and with ourselves.

I walk you through a visualization practice I love using with clients and what it looks like to scoop yourself up, claim all of your parts, and refuse to leave any piece of who you are behind.
