We always appreciate when our awesome families leave us a review. Thank you so much for the 5-star Google review.

“ It is hard to find to good care in Asheville, especially if you are a Medicaid patient, but Blue Sky Pediatrics provides exceptional services and we are lucky to have them as our provider. My son sees Dr. Alweiss, and he is just a super nice guy. He listens, fully answers any questions we might have, and is both patient and kind to my child with level-three autism, which is always appreciated. The staff is welcoming and friendly, we get prompt calls back to messages, and if we need to be seen same day for sick visits, they always fit us in. Truly, I can't say enough good things about this office. A+++”

Cyclosporiasis has been making headlines across North Carolina and nationally in recent days. Here's what Henderson County residents need to know.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite. People become infected by consuming food or water that contains the parasite.

A common symptom is watery diarrhea. Other symptoms may include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea and fatigue. Symptoms usually begin about one week after exposure but may appear as soon as two days or as long as two weeks or more afterward.

Henderson County has had five confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis. Typically, two to three cases are reported in the county annually. At this time, no common link or source has been identified among the local cases. Our Communicable Disease team continues to monitor for further cases.

Practicing good food safety can help reduce your risk:

Wash Your Hands
✓ Wash your hands with soap and water before and after handling fresh fruits and vegetables.

Prepare Produce Safely
✓ Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating, cutting or cooking them.
✓ Produce labeled "prewashed" does not need to be washed again.
✓ Scrub firm produce, such as melons and cucumbers, with a clean produce brush.
✓ Cut away any damaged or bruised areas before preparing or eating fruits and vegetables.

Cook Produce When Appropriate
✓ Cooking produce, when appropriate, provides an additional layer of protection.

Store Produce Properly
✓ Refrigerate cut, peeled or cooked fruits and vegetables within two hours.

People with symptoms are at risk for dehydration and hospitalization. If you develop symptoms of cyclosporiasis, contact your healthcare provider.
