This week, U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, and Oregon State Rep. Cyrus Javadi visited the BuildCMH Expansion Project construction site and held a press conference at CMH to bring attention to FEMA's holdout on the BRIC grant originally awarded to CMH in 2023.
"Building a vertical evacuation … is very innovative and it is the type of investment that is going to work to save people’s lives. You can’t run fast enough to escape a tsunami. This is the type of investment the federal government should be making," Bonamici said during the press conference. "We are all united in the goal of expanding access to state-of-the-art medical care and strengthening the hospital so that it can withstand a major earthquake and tsunami and be shelter for community during the aftermath. Touring the site today, I am so encouraged to see this project moving forward. A natural disaster’s not going to wait."
Javadi and Rayfield echoed her words.
"Having a resilient hospital here is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. A hospital that can stand up to an event like a Cascadia event is about basic good governance. It’s about peace of mind for the community," Javadi said. "I think we can all agree that access to health care when we need it, regardless of where we live in the state, is important."
