Please join us in welcoming Kaitlyn Schneider, FNP-C, to primary care at Amberwell Atchison!
Kaitlyn Schneider, FNP-C, is a nurse practitioner providing primary care at Amberwell Atchison, caring for patients of all ages across the full range of what primary care covers, from everyday illness and injury to the ongoing management of chronic conditions.
She comes to Amberwell after working as a registered nurse and completing a graduate program that took her through primary care, care for older adults, women's health, and pediatrics. The variety is what she found most rewarding, and it is a large part of why she chose primary care.
Kaitlyn grew up in Wi******er, where her family still lives, and she has made her home in the area. She went to Pittsburg State University for her undergraduate degree, and that time away showed her how much it would mean to her to live and work in a small town.
Kaitlyn already knows Amberwell Atchison from the inside. She spent several months of her graduate training at the clinic and around the Atchison community, including Benedictine College Student Health Center and several senior living communities, seeing how the clinic runs and working with the people at Amberwell. When a position opened, she was excited to apply. "Everybody that I met at Amberwell was really great. So once there was an opportunity, I was like, I'll hop right on that."
What she recognized at Amberwell was something she had grown up with. "I grew up in a small town, and the Atchison community has a family sense. Amberwell has kept with that small town community and family atmosphere, which I grew up loving."
When choosing where to practice, Kaitlyn knew what she wanted. "I was impressed with everything when I did my student rotation here, so I'm excited to be part of the Amberwell family."
Nursing runs in Kaitlyn's family. Her mother spent 23 years as a postpartum nurse working nights before moving into a management role, and Kaitlyn's younger sister is following the same path.
Kaitlyn started at a Topeka clinic as a nurse intern while she was still in nursing school and was hired on as a registered nurse after graduating. When she began her graduate program, she expected to add a subspecialty later. Her primary care rotation changed her mind. "Once I hit the primary care clinical, I loved it. I was like, yeah, this is the right track."
What settled it was the range of the work. "I like that every patient is different. You see all kinds of people with all kinds of things going on. I like that you get to help people manage a condition over time, and also help them when something comes up unexpectedly."
Kaitlyn worked as a registered nurse at a clinic where the same patients came back again and again, and that is where she found the part of the work she values most. "I grew to love developing patient relationships, and my patients kept coming back. I liked getting to know them, I liked hearing about their kids and their vacations."
That is what she was looking for in primary care. She wanted a practice where she would see the same people at different points in their lives, and where knowing someone well makes her better at caring for them.
She is looking forward to the same thing in Atchison, and she likes knowing she may run into her patients around town.
Athletics are a big part of Kaitlyn's family life. Her father is a longtime football coach, and her partner coaches basketball and track, so she spends much of the year in the stands or the gym. She is a Green Bay Packers fan in Chiefs country, a loyalty she shares with her father, and the two of them make a trip to Lambeau Field every December.
Kaitlyn is a dog lover with dogs at home. She also enjoys reading and working out.
