A few simple precautions can help prevent an unexpected trip to the pet ER:
🌭 Keep pets away from fatty foods, cooked bones, corn cobs, chocolate, grapes, onions, and foods containing xylitol.
🔥 Keep curious paws and noses away from hot grills, fire pits, and cooking equipment.
☀️ Watch for overheating and make sure pets always have access to fresh water, shade, and a cool place to rest.
🚤 Use extra caution around pools, lakes, and boats, even if your pet is normally a strong swimmer.
🚪 Keep doors and gates secure when guests are coming and going. Make sure your pet's ID tags and microchip information are up to date, just in case they slip away.

𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! Make sure your pet's microchip registration and ID tags have your current phone number and contact information. During severe weather or an evacuation, frightened pets may escape or become separated from their families.

When your pet isn't feeling well, it can be difficult to know whether the problem can wait until your family veterinarian opens or requires immediate emergency care.

If you're ever unsure, it's always better to call or seek emergency care. Acting quickly can make all the difference.

⚠️ Seek emergency veterinary care right away if your pet is experiencing:
🩸 Severe bleeding or wounds
🚗 Trauma after being hit by a vehicle or another serious accident
😮 Difficulty breathing or choking
🧠 Seizures or loss of consciousness
🤮 Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, especially if accompanied by lethargy or blood
🐶 Ingestion of toxins, medications, chocolate, xylitol, grapes, raisins, or other harmful substances
🎾 Swallowing a foreign object such as toys, socks, rocks, or bones

Heatstroke is one of the most serious emergencies we see during the warmer months, and it can become life-threatening in a matter of minutes. Knowing the warning signs and taking simple precautions can make all the difference. Heatstroke can occur in hot weather, during strenuous activity, in hot vehicles, or in any situation where a pet cannot cool itself effectively.
