Measure three times right?

With the Essential or Clinical Bike Fit, we set you up on the fit bike and get measurements of contact points of your ideal numbers . From there we order your new bike based on the numbers or we retrofit your current bike the best we can based on how many changes we need and can make.

I fell in a creek last week 😂

I always tell folks, if you’re doing rad things like riding bikes, running ,lifting, suspending yourself in the air (ahem ) , etc, etc… you might get injured . BUT all those injuries are nothing compared to the diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle!

Fun day in the office with a mix of physical therapy and a fun bike fit to end the day!

Changes… raised saddle , saddle forward, shorter stem, and a NEW SADDLE to help with sitting posture. An uncomfortable saddle can cause excessive posterior pelvic tilt ... Making the handlebars and total reach virtually “farther away.”
Client will mostly commute without a use of a chamois so we wanted to make sure the saddle was at a comfortable level for without a chamois and then for longer exercise rides the use of a chamois is always nice. 🩵

The bars were narrower in diameter so we need to order a stem that will be compatible. Therefore I just had the client put hands where they will be just get a visual and feel.

I love working with people of all goals. The basic bike fit option is great for people who don’t clip in and/or do lower mileage or commute. All people of all goals should be comfortable and more efficient on the bike.

Also fun fact…. This bike moved with me from Columbia SC . Halfway through fit we realized the bike belonged to my old roomie when we moved from Columbia to Athens! I lived with this exact bike 😂 Small world we live in.

Often times people wonder why they have a new pain on the bike that they had a bike fit on and were happy with it for years. BUT so often we are changing. Whether from injuries, surgeries, or losing mobility as we age… change happens and so does our bike fit.

Sometimes I don’t need to change the fit and the pain is primarily intrinsic. We do off the bike rehab in those cases. BUT a new bike fit may be part of that rehab . This can be a permanent change OR it can be done as a temporary change in order to support healing.

Some Examples I have seen:
▫️Carpal tunnel surgeries and requiring less pressure on hands
▫️ Total knee or hip replacement and requiring changing angles and changing leg lengths
▫️Broken bones changing how the bone is angled
▫️ Changes in the age of your spine requiring more forgiving angles.
▫️etc etc etc

I recommend a re-fit after any major musculoskeletal surgery once you have clearance to ride inside. Don’t force your body to work through to your old position. This can cause new pains and new compensations.

Changes that are often made include:

▫️ Changes to saddle height and setback to alter joint angles
▫️Changes to stance
▫️ Change to reach and subtle weight distribution on bars.
▫️ Shorter cranks to open up angles of knee and hip .
▫️Changes to drop based on changes to spinal range of motion
▫️Changes to hood angles

Permanent or Temporary ? Many variables to answer that questions. Total joint replacement? Likely permanent with some tweaks as range of motion is worked on. We want to preserve the joint decreasing any stressors on the new joint. Also variables include how dedicated a client is to their rehab, age, and what are specifics of the injury, goals, etc as to whether the changes are temporary or permanent.

At end of the day, being comfortable will make you happier and better on the bike. And we don’t want a new injury while you heal. For example, new back pain because unknowingly you are forcing a hip into flexion when it doesn’t have it anymore. You might even need a couple of fits that year after a big musculoskeletal injury or surgery. Who you are one month out is different than six months out.

Rule out spine? Nope, I’m gonna EXHAUST the spine first as the source of pain before I move to the extremity. Extremity pain can 100% be referral from spine. Proper testing is imperative.

Or sometimes I get a 80% improvement from treating only the spine and then get the last 20% addressing the joint in pain. Success comes from appropriate testing and a compliant client 💜
