Kathy Culver Nickell, 70, of Wheaton, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois.
Kathy was born on November 22, 1955, in Springfield, Illinois, to Edward Herrick Culver and Kathryn Burnett Culver, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Randall (“Randy”) Lee Nickell, and her sister, Linda Culver.
She is lovingly remembered by her sons, David (Katharine) Nickell and Christopher (Kaitlyn) Nickell; her cherished grandchildren, Ellie, Hannah, Silas, and Theodore; her sister, Mary Lou Culver; and many extended family members, dear friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives she touched.
Growing up in Springfield, Kathy treasured the time she spent with her sisters and extended family at her grandparents’ home in nearby Athens, Illinois. Those close-knit family gatherings helped shape the values of love, faith, and service that guided her throughout her life.
Kathy attended Springfield High School, where she met the love of her life, Randy Nickell, through their church youth group. Their friendship grew into a lifelong romance, and they became high school sweethearts. On August 12, 1978, they were married at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, beginning a marriage built on faith, love, and unwavering partnership.
A gifted student with a lifelong love of learning, Kathy earned her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, graduating with Bronze Tablet honors. She remained immensely proud of that accomplishment and delighted in showing her sons her name displayed in the University’s Graduate Library whenever the family returned to campus. She later earned her master’s degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she and Randy began the next chapter of their lives together.
Kathy began her professional career with Southwestern Bell in Dallas but soon discovered that her true calling was in the classroom. Randy’s career took their family from Dallas to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and eventually to Wheaton, Illinois, where they built their home and community. In 1988, Kathy joined the mathematics faculty at College of DuPage, where she served with dedication and excellence for more than three decades until her retirement in 2021. Thousands of students benefited from her patience, encouragement, and remarkable ability to make mathematics approachable.
While Kathy’s accomplishments were many, those who knew her best will remember her most for the way she cared for others. She was, above all else, a caregiver. Whether as a devoted wife and mother, a proud grandmother, an educator shaping young minds, or a faithful Deacon serving her church, Kathy found joy in helping others and putting their needs before her own. Her kindness was quiet, genuine, and unwavering.
Faith was the foundation of Kathy’s life. She was raised in the Presbyterian tradition at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield and later became a devoted member and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton. She lived out her faith not only through worship but through humble acts of service, compassion, and generosity toward those around her.
Kathy found her greatest happiness in spending time with her grandchildren, whose lives brought her endless joy. She also enjoyed practicing yoga, taking long walks, and catching up with friends over the phone—often for hours at a time. She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel remembered and loved. No birthday ever slipped her mind; family and friends could always count on Kathy’s birthday card arriving in the mail well before their special day.
Kathy’s life was one of quiet faithfulness. She never sought recognition, only opportunities to love, teach, encourage, and serve. Her family will remember her gentle strength, her steadfast faith, and the countless everyday acts of kindness that defined her life. Her students will remember a teacher who believed in them. Her friends will remember someone who always made time for a conversation. And those fortunate enough to receive one of her birthday cards will forever smile when the mail arrives, remembering the woman who never forgot the people she loved.
Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the students she inspired, the church she faithfully served, and the many lives made better simply because Kathy was part of them.
A private family interment will be held in Athens, IL, on 7/28/26. A local memorial service will be held for friends & family at First Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, IL (715 N Carlton Ave) at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
