As we wrap up this first week of filming, I realize there is an important acknowledgment that should not go unmentioned.

Michael Apke-Starkey, thank you for the countless contributions you made to Phase One of this project. From securing and coordinating the filming space, to helping develop activities and scripts, to recruiting our student volunteers and an exceptional team of educational professionals, your leadership helped make this week possible.

You drew upon a remarkable network of friends and colleagues and assembled exactly the right group of people for this endeavor. Their expertise, professionalism, and commitment were evident throughout the filming process and contributed greatly to the quality of what we were able to create.

Michael's work on the project will continue as we move into next week's filming, but I didn't want this week to pass without expressing our appreciation for the time, energy, creativity, and dedication she has invested. We are grateful for all you have done and all that is still to come.

Also a very special thank you to Evan Shaw and his team at Longview Creative, Eric Vucelich and Jack Cowman, for their outstanding work during Phase One of filming.

From the very beginning, they created an environment that was relaxed, supportive, and comfortable for everyone involved, especially our student volunteers. Their professionalism, patience, creativity, and ability to put both children and adults at ease helped make the entire experience enjoyable and successful.

Day 1 of filming is complete!

What an incredible day. Months of planning came to life as our team brought "The Readiness Sequence: Practical Neuroscience for Learning Environments" into action. The experience, knowledge, and talent of everyone involved truly shined through, and our student volunteers were engaged, enthusiastic, and amazing to work with. The vision is starting to become reality, and we can't wait to share it with educators this fall

After many months of planning, writing, revising, and preparing, filming begins tomorrow for "The Readiness Sequence: Practical Neuroscience for Learning Environments".

This project has been a true labor of love and represents the work of an incredible team of educators, clinicians, and consultants who share a common belief: before we can expect students to learn, we need to understand what helps them become ready to learn.

Over the next two days, we will be filming a series of practical, classroom-based videos designed to help educators better understand the relationship between sensory integration, regulation, connection, and learning. Our goal is to translate developmental neuroscience into simple, accessible strategies that can be used in real-world learning environments. The project also explores how readiness-based practices can strengthen the foundation of integrated school support systems such as MTSS.

A special thank you to the Appalachian Children Coalition for their vision and financial support in making this project possible. Their commitment to children, families, and schools throughout our region continues to create meaningful opportunities for innovation and growth.

The completed series will be available this fall and we look forward to sharing more updates as filming and production move forward.

For now, we're taking a deep breath, checking our equipment, gathering our team and volunteers, and getting ready to bring this project to life.

I’ve been thinking a great deal lately about the concept of readiness. Not simply as an individual trait, but as a condition shaped by regulation, relationship, context, and system capacity.

This recent article in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience caught my attention because it reframes trauma through the lens of predictive coding and nervous system flexibility rather than simply “stored experience.”

One of the ideas I find especially compelling is the notion that under chronic stress, the brain and nervous system can become increasingly organized around predicting danger and rigidity rather than flexibility and adaptation.

From a practical standpoint, this raises important questions:

What conditions help people become more available for connection, learning, healing, and change?

What happens when environmental stress, overload, and instability begin to outweigh the regulating and relational experiences people need to grow?

And how do we build systems, classrooms, organizations, caregiving environments, communities, that restore enough stability and flexibility for meaningful change to occur?

Fascinating direction in neuroscience and one that feels highly relevant to the realities many individuals and systems are navigating right now.

These are themes we will be exploring more deeply through The Map Forward Project in the months ahead.

I wanted to share a truly useful piece of research for anyone working with kids, families or systems change. The review by Vaidya and colleagues (2024) brings together what neuroscience is now telling us about how early adversity shapes the brain. Whether the adversity is neglect, peer victimization, poverty or emotional loss, it shows up in brain circuits and functions - but in different ways, depending on timing and context. This is not fate however! Knowing how these pathways operate gives us leverage for intervention. If you’re designing practices or supports, this is a useful reference point. I’ll drop the link in the comments so you can dive in when you have time.

At The Map Forward Project, we are evolving our work to help translate neuroscientific principles such as dosing, spacing and regulation, from individual healing to systemic transformation. Sustainable change honors the same rhythm the brain uses to grow.

Neuroscience teaches us that growth happens through dosing and spacing...small, tolerable doses of challenge followed by periods of regulation and integration.

Organizations are no different. A large study found that when workplaces undergo repeated change (new systems, restructures, shifting priorities), employees’ sense of clarity, control, and support declines. That’s change fatigue in action, not resistance. It is a predictable neurobiological response to overstimulation. See link to study in comments below.

If we designed change the way the brain learns, we’d build in pauses, reflection, and rhythm. We’d recognize that transformation isn’t a sprint; it’s a back and forth between activation and rest.

The more we learn about childhood adversity, the clearer it becomes that early experiences leave traces not only in our hearts but in our biology. I find hope in this research, because what’s wired through stress can also be rewired through safety, rhythm, and relationship.
