June is Aphasia Awareness Month
Communication is more than words. It’s connection, independence, dignity and quality of life. For individuals living with aphasia after stroke, brain injury or neurological illness, everyday conversations can suddenly become overwhelming.
That’s where rehabilitation changes lives.
Our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play a critical role in helping patients regain communication skills, rebuild confidence and reconnect with the people and activities that matter most.
Virginia Gay Hospital proudly recognizes our incredible rehab team and the dedicated SLPs who make communication easier, one patient, one breakthrough, and one conversation at a time. Learn how we can help: 319-472-6372

Employee Spotlight: My name is Jessica Albertsen. I have been employed at VGH for 18 years. I am currently a registered nurse at the Vinton Family Medical Clinic. I work with Dr. Elgin in the clinic, but I still pick up hours at the hospital. I love the opportunity that this facility has given me. I started splitting 3rd and 1st shifts in the hospital in 2007, then I got the chance to train as a circulating nurse in the OR and eventually into a management role. I helped create the PICC line team, became a BLS instructor, and I have gotten the opportunity to work with Quality Management and IT departments. Everyone here works so well with staff on flexibility and family needs.
A cause I am very passionate about the Iowa Donor Network. After my husband's accident, he was a candidate for donation. They worked with us through the entire process, and I have had the opportunity to share our story to others about organ donation in person and on the radio.
My favorite hobby would be going to music concerts. I may not be a great singer, but I love listening and singing out loud to all types of music. I also like to play pickleball, go to flea markets, and go boating. We also love to go on vacation. We have been to Yellowstone National Park a couple of times and each time is different. There is so much to see, you are constantly looking at wildlife or amazing views.
I have two daughters: Lydia who is attending South Dakota State University and Laney who will be a Senior in high school. We also have a dog Tank, a cat Pluto, and a fish Toothpick. A fun fact about me is that I attended a one room schoolhouse as a child in rural Nebraska. There was only one other student in my grade and only 9 of us in the school.

Eating is an important part of life for all of us! If you experience difficulty eating, drinking, or swallowing, you may benefit from a swallowing evaluation. VGH's speech-language pathologist is trained in Flexible Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing (FEES), a gold standard assessment used to determine the presence and severity of swallowing deficits. This assessment allows the therapist to determine if the throat muscles and structures are functioning correctly and make recommendations that meet each person's needs!
