Excited to see author, Whitney Ostrander, at the Atlanta OCD Walk TOMORROW! She’ll be our featured speaker. You won’t want to miss it. In her book, By His Stripes, Whitney shares her lived experience with OCD and faith/religion. While I’m a secular person and psychologist myself, I am always open and curious about people’s connections to a “bigger picture”, for some, like Whitney, that’s organized religion. And of course, there’s always that pesky scrupulosity that can bubble up for religious people with OCD because OCD always goes for what individual sufferers care about most. Anyway… check Whitney out!!! 👏🏽📖 Her book is available on Amazon.

OCD Awareness Week

Today’s Topic: Effective Treatment Strategies

OCD is a serious mental health problem that needs effective treatment. OCD tends to be a chronic condition that comes and goes in severity across the lifespan. People with OCD may need just one episode of evidence-based treatment or they may find they need on-going or episodic treatment to keep the worst of OCD symptoms at bay.

Experts recommend people with OCD begin specialized treatment immediately. Yet, it often takes over a decade to get the right help due to lack of awareness among the public as well as medical and mental health providers. Unfortunately, many people with OCD, and their providers, waste valuable time, energy, and money on treatments that are not specific to OCD. For example, some types of trauma therapy (like EMDR), hypnotherapy, and general talk therapy may not help or may make symptoms worse.

People with OCD need specific evidence-based treatments delivered by mental health providers with specialized knowledge and training. A type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) called exposure and response prevention (ERP) is recommended.Another therapy called acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) may also help if provided in conjunction with ERP. Sometimes people with OCD benefit from taking medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
